PostPosted: Sat Jul 08, 2006 5:03 am    Post subject: Expandable Handset Cordless Phones not Working Reply with quote Back to top

I signed up for Vonage a couple weeks ago, and everything is working fine. However, I can only use one phone because ever since transferring my service to Vonage I can only use the cordless phone that is associated with my base unit. The expandable handsets do not have a dial tone. I tried to rewire the house so that I could distribute the Voip to all of my phone jacks but I have archaic wiring and couldnt find instruction for doing this on homes without a Network Interface Device.

If you gouys could help me in utilyzing all of my handsets, or more importantly help me rewire the house I would appreciate it. The wiring my house uses is almost identical to the pic below (except I have a three wires - green and two silver wires - going to one terminal, two wires - red and silver - in the other terminal, and four wires - red, green, black and yellow - going in the middle terminal).

Are they 2.4Ghz phones? Do you have a wireless router?

Baysic, given that your wiring is clearly non-standard with the way that those wires are hooked together, I'd start addressing the house wiring issue by carefully taking the cover off each of the phone jacks in your house and noting exactly how they are wired. What color wires go to what?? Don't disturb anything at this point. Just take a hard look.

Do you really have red, green, black, and yellow wires all hooked together on a single terminal in the junction box?? I mean electrically connected, bare wire to bare wire? Can you identify the wires that go into the house and the wires that go underground or to a pole? Can you post an actual photograph of your junction box?

My phones are 5.8 GHz, and I do have a wireless ruoter in my home through which my two laptops access the internet. My Vonage router, however, is not wireless.

Below are pics of my wiring.

OK, it appears to me that the line from outside is the heavy black cable with red, green, yellow, and black wires coming out of it. It's held down by the center terminal. The yellow and black wires coming from it appear to be unconnected and the red and green are connected to the right and left terminals (top photograph). Correct so far? Verify that this is the cable from outside by opening up the jacks inside your house. The wires you see coming into the boxes should be like the multi-colored wires in your pictures, not the solid red, green, yellow, and black colors.

If this is all correct, disconnect the red and green wires from the right and left terminals and insulate the ends. Leave the other wires connected to the terminals. That should have you disconnected from the land line, and all you need to do is plug the Vonage box into a wall jack.
