Vonage is one of the few companies that still uses the sleazy advertising spyware software that is bundled with KaZaa.

Could we expect anything less from a company founded by a man fined 22.5 million by the SEC and permanently banned from the securities industry (where he had worked from the age of 17).

I wonder if this sleazy practice will turn out to bite Vonage in the back and be the cause of yet another lawsuit.

This was discussed previously on this forum; Vonage Caught in Major Spyware Bust over a year ago.

It is widely known that Vonage uses Direct Revenue.

However, who else advertises with them?

In the company of Spyware wrote:
What do such pillars of American enterprise as Chase, Citi, Sprint, T-Mobile, Travelocity, and United Airlines have in common? Well, at least for one thing, they are all advertisers with adware vendor Direct Revenue. Which means of course that they are all helping fund the plague of intrusive software that threatens the security of our computers and the Internet.

Vonage, as the first or second ranked highest advertiser on the net for as far back as I can remember is bound to be in deals with this type of company because they account for 20% of all advertising dollars on the web.

Additionally, as long as it remains legal, this is a highly effective form of advertising because it allows the advertiser to display their ad when the user is looking for information about the type of product being sold. The legality is in question because States have adopted laws banning spyware, there have been threats to hold advertisers accountable for violations but this would be a significant expansion of current law.

I don't know if it applies here, but I read an article a while back, that a lot of companies don't even know where some their advertising money goes. They just care that they get advertising. For example, Vonage pays marketing company A. Company A then subcontracts company B and C. Company C buys internet ads from company J. Company J subcontracts to viral marketing, and other kinds of internet advertising, which may include pop ups, spam, affiliate programs (other than the officially sponsored program). Vonage may not even know it is getting a bad name by affiliating with these companies, because they may not even know they are affiliated with these companies.

Actually, if you look at the article, all of the big companies mentioned EXCEPT Vonage has stopped using spyware advertising.

I don't think this is because they are angels, but because they realize it is not in their long-term interests to be associated with it.

Vonage, however, does not have a long-term. It is going bankrupt within a year. So supporting the unethical and probably illegal behavior of the spyware scumbags who RUIN PEOPLE'S COMPUTERS in order to drive up subscriber numbers in the short term is logical.

The entire goal of management right now is not to run a good company, but to keep the stock price up until November when they are allowed to sell all the shares they got for under $3.00.
