I just signed up with Vonage (haven't received the equipment yet) and I'd like to be able to bring the audio from the phone call into a recorder (my pc's soundcard). Traditionally in broadcasting, we've used a gentner system to put calls on the air. Would that same "pots" system work with Vonage?

Are there other options for routing the call audio to an external recording input?

Thanks...and looking forward to great service with Vonage!

Daniel

If you're just recording the calls, I'd suggest going over to http://www.oxid.it and download a program called Cain. under the Sniffer tab, you'll see a Voip tab. You can use that program to directly capture & save the phone calls to your hard drive (providing the Vonage adapter and computer are connected to the same network via a hub (not a switch)). The cool part about that program is that it saves the outgoing audio in the left channel, incoming on the right channel. PERFECT for radio interviews.

As far as going live, I've done it a few times with Vonage. BUT, I will say, the RTP300/WRTP54G have issues with digital Gentner/Comrex hybrids specifically, where they'll put out a ton of white noise. The problem started with a version of the firmware and hasn't been (probably won't be) resolved. Works fine with the PAP2 and other Vonage devices 'though. Oddly enough, I've not had the same issue when using Telos hybrids.

Just wanted to add that I have used a Comrex Vector (newer version of the Comrex Hotline) with Vonage and got a decent broadcast out of it. I think it'd only connect up to 26.4k, but that's better than I've seen out of the landlines in the area.

My company is has just released VONaLink SoloRecord. It was developed after reading from this forum, the need to record calls directly off the network. For more info:

Hmm... there's free tools out there to do everything your program does except for the Outlook integration.

So, back to CAIN: once I've installed the program and clicked the sniffer tab and then the Voip tab... what is the next step to start recording... then to save the file, etc...

Is it automatic? The icons on the program seem non-descript.

Thanks,
Daniel

...if I can't get cain to work, i might be interested in the pay software mentioned here already.

Are you either using a hub, or do you have ARP poisoning enabled? If not, you'll need to fulfill that requirement first. If you have it set up already then you just need to start a call and it will shortly pop up in the Voip tab's window. Once the call is ended you can review the file in Cain's installed directory, in the Voip folder.

Don't pay for the software, I think Cain will work fine for you.

I'm using a router in addition to the motorola Vonage router... I enabled the ARP (at least what I think has enabled it), restarted the computer and still nothing...

Any advice? I even disabled firewalls to see if that was blocking something.

Try changing the audio quality. Some codecs are supported, others are not.

I have only seen Vonage use G711 ulaw.

If you use a hub to connect the ATA and computer together, you do not have to setup the ARP posioning in Cain, and recording just happens.

VONaLink SoloRecord does not use ARP poisioning, so a hub is needed.
