I got it to work! Too cool. Now a question:

I right click the file in Cain and select play and it opens as a wav file in Adobe Audition, but's a low sample rate. How do you change those settings?

I, using audition, increased the sample rate and it seemed to work and sound fine, but I was wondering if there was a way to record at the higher rate in the first place and avoid this step.

By the way, since I knew nothing about Cain, the video link tutorial you included was my saving help.

I don't think there is a way, but I could be wrong. Obviously Cain isn't made to be a fully customizable Voip recorder...

I'm glad I found it, and I'm glad it helped. I had no clue how to do the ARP Poisoning to record calls before I found that.

From Vonage website, you can login to specify bandwith saver setiing. If Cain shows that your recording is using PCMU 8Khz, then it is at the best quality.

You can try to increase the sample rate, but I believe that is the actual rate being used by the G.711 codec in the way Vonage uses it.

Well - this looks like it will work. I am able to record the caller's end of the interview with Cain on a separate channel while at the same time, using my COOL EDIT/AUDITION program to record my side of the interview with a mic (getting a studio-quality sound from me instead of an over-the-phone sound).

The only trick is then synching the two sides of the conversation together. Which... isn't that hard. Just put my side on one track of the multitrack editor and the caller's side on the second track. Then, match up the conversation and mixdown.

And, I don't much understand it, but regarding the quality: if I take the original wav file produced by CAIN and convert the sample rate up to 44100 mono 16-bit, it sounds much better.

Thanks guys for all your help in solving this problem.

I'm wondering if this is your sound card or some sort of processing done in Audition, as G.711, by definition, is 8Khz, 8-bit audio. The call should sound the same, regardless of if you're using the 8Khz files cranked out by Cain or an upsampled 44.1Khz file. Usually once you've degraded audio, it's not normally possible to restore it to its former quality, without doing some serious processing and even then, a full restoration isn't always possible. Now, if you're talking about the audio you've recorded from the microphone, then yes, you will have a difference there and it should be noticable.

If you're doing something like the radio interviews (and have the funds to do it), you can't go wrong with a good telephone hybrid. They have sophisticated DSPs which null out any sidetone/feedback and would do what you're trying to do in realtime... So you'd be able to hear the full conversation, but your audio would be from your microphone rather than the telephone. The downside is that they aren't cheap, even on e-bay.

I am wondering if anyone knows if its legal to capture a Voip call in your home? Has the wiretap laws been amended to Voip and sniffing?
