Hi,

I ran the test and did not write down all the results because I could not believe they were so good. All green lights. It said I could support up to 9 connections at the same time. 0 packet loss. In reality, I can hear everyone else fine but they always tell me that the connection is choppy. I use a regular phone on the fax line and everyone who calls gets an echo with that one. I've called Vonage multiple times but the end result is always the same - I can hear everything very well but others cannot hear me well.

Well, I'm getting very frustrated with Vonage. I have better reception with my cell phone! Do I just give up at this point or is there an answer?

My tests usually are a lot better than this one but there are a lot of other conditions within the pipe which Vonage has no sight of or control over. Unless someone on the forum has access to a spectrum analyzer to dig a bit deeper, we will either have to live with the service as is or jump ship and pay more. When I first ported over to Vonage from SBC the customer service and call quality were top notch but things seem to have changed. There are times where you get a good deal and there are other times where you get what you pay for.

When I need to make a call when choppy audio is an issue, I just fire up SKYPE on the PC and have a flawless and free conversation. Since all good things usually come to an end, the free is going away in 2007

Other people not being able to hear you is a problem (usually) with your upload speed.

Since the speed tests seem to be passing, I'll ask the obvious question - do you do any large uploads, like P2P applications or some other form of upload (including running a web or other server on your connection)?

Are you testing your connection under the exact same conditions you make your calls under? (ie. do you shut down P2P before doing the tests, etc).

Also, try the Voip test at www.testyourvoip.com just to have a second opinion.

Testyourvoip.com test results -

Your score: 2.9 which is between Like tin cans and string and
As bad as a crummy cell phone call

So those results are very different. The test is run under the same conditions as when I am on the phone. There are no large uploads being done to change the conditions of my phone quality.

Any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks.

You said that you use a regular phone on your fax line. Is there a cordless on your voice line? Could it be interfering with your wireless router? Does anything improve if you temporarily disconnect the wireless?

Please post the detailed results from testyourvoip. It would also be helpful to everyone if you'd post the forum Voip and testyourvoip comparison results on the Voip test thread at the top of the forum. If the results are not comparing well, the forum test programmer needs to know about it.

Both phone lines have a cordless phone on them. Both Panasonic, both 5.8gz, slightly different model. Also different problems. Fax line has bad echo that the person I'm talking to hears. Regular line has the choppy voice problem (on the side of the person who I'm talking to). On both lines I hear everyone very well.

When I ran testyourvoip again, the results were closer to the test here. Following are the results from me (Chicago area) to Boston:
Media Quality
MOS
3.6 / 5.0
(Best with G.711 is 4.4)

Degradation Sources
Codec 0.57 40.2%
Latency 0.00 0.0%
Packet Discards 0.85 59.8%
Packet Loss 0.00 0.0%
Codec G.711 (PCM at 64kbps,
20ms RTP payload,
80kbps IP BW)
Round-Trip
Latency 143 ms
Packet Discards 3.6%
Packet Loss 0.0%
Loss Periods
Min: 20 ms
Avg: 20 ms
Max: 60 ms
Random Loss
Jitter
Min: 0 ms
Avg: 4 ms
Max: 46 ms
Signaling Quality
Post-Dial Delay 140 ms
Call Setup Time 180 ms
Media Delay 351 ms

I would love to keep using Vonage if possible, but I can't do that unless these problems clear up. Since my cell phone gets better reception, I might just go to that only.

Thanks for any help.

My understanding is the fax line is a bare naked Embarassed line. No extras like echo cancellation, call waiting or anything that might interfere with a fax.

OK, the problem is with your packet discards on the uplink. 3.6% is too high. Try plugging your computer directly into your modem and re-running the test. If the discards go way down, then the problem is with your local network- basically the Vonage adapter. If they don't, then you have an issue that you need to work with your ISP. (I include the modem itself as an ISP issue.)
