For those who think Vonage outages are bad... my local landline carrier makes Voip look rock-solid. FWIW, Sprint spun off their landline service to create a new company called Embarq. Same poor service, new name, higher prices. Having no phone service for 3 days would kill me. While I'm not affected by this current outage, it just reminds me that I'll probably see something like the 10-14 days of no landline service last year.

CAPE CORAL: Between 5,000 and 7,000 residents are without phone service in Cape Coral after a telephone line was cut at Del Prado and 36th Terrace. Crews are working to restore service, but say it may not be restored until Saturday.

A contractor is believed to have cut the cables Thursday around 4:30 p.m.

"Our crews are working as fast as they can and investigating the situation. The repairs are hampered by the rain in the area," said Michelle Pinneau of Embarq.

Service is not expected to be restored until Saturday.

Damn contractors! Aren't they supposed to verify stuff before they cut? I remember that happened once when I was working at Commander, Pacific Fleet HQ. I think it was a Verizon Fed guy who did it. He was gone by the end of the day.

Florida has a very good utility marking program -- totally free to the contractors. You call a single 800 # and they'll come out and mark ALL of the wires/ gas / water / sewer lines/etc. Usually they ask for a 2 day notice, but I've been able to get them out there the same day for emergency work. As far as Sprint's attitude, it's only slightly better than HellSouth and years behind GTE/ex-GTE Verizon.

True, but one of the problems in central Florida- and, I suspect, in many places- is that many cables are laid close to the surface and completely unprotected. I suppose it's cheaper to repair a cut cable than to properly protect it to begin with, but I don't have much sympathy for the cable owners when it happens.

The last Vonage outage I had was sometime in 2005. Can't remember the exact date, but it's been a looong time.

I have ranted about regulated service many times and last night was a nightmare at my office.

We have (4) t-1's [72 switched voice and 1.5 data] - and we had rolling interruptions for 3 hours and then finally (1) t-1 just bit the dust.

Finally after proving to the provider (XO) that it was not our equipment, they sent the "last mile" contractor (Verizon) to check. A 2 hour wait.

After 3 hours of tinkering he sill could not get it running. Finally it was discovered that the t-1 was in "alarm lockout". Meanaing the t-1 was put in an "offline status". It was reset and everything ws fine.

Heres the kicker - when a t-1 is in that state it is considered "inactive" and thus the downtime does not count towards the government regulated standard for availability - according to the "government watchdogs" my t-1 was only down 13.7 minutes. not 5.75 hours.

Hows that for service on a $1175/mo (plus taxes) line?

The last time I had problems with my 5 lines of Vonage at home, I unplugged and replugged in my router. I gave the technician (me) a beer for his time, told him how great he was, my wife and kids kissed him and he went to bed happpy.

Interesting.

We had a cable cut here a few weeks back (in far upstate New York) and it appeared the Verizon lines in question were "close to the surface and completely unprotected." I wonder how common this is.

I'm the news director of a small tv station, and as the cut turned into big news in our small town, I had our reporters pressing to find out just how big an issue losing 911 service was.

(The emergency folks had immediately put out warnings and cautions, as they should, when the cut happened.)

911 told us that the number of cell calls they get more than doubles their landline calls.

Between TW phones, other suppliers (like Vonage) and most especially cell phones, the consensus was - it's a big deal if you don't have it, but no longer the community crisis it would have been, say, five years ago.
