Hello, I am new to Vonage and so far the whole process is very frustrating. I was sent the router...Motorola VT2442. I followed the directions exactly as listed but I cannot get an internet connection from the router and the computer. From the cable modem to the computer I get the internet but once I reroute the cables I get no connection. I contacted Vonage and they sent out another router in case the first one was bad but still the same problem. I spent over an hour each for both routers on the phone with customer service but still could not get it hooked up properly. If anyone knows what the problem is, please help. I am not very good with computers so any explanations will have to be described thoroughly. Thank you

Cable modems like to memorize the hardware address (MAC address) of the computer they are working with. This can cause problems when attempting to put new equipment in place between your computer and your cable modem.

tacit: MacWizard at Mac Fixit Forums wrote:

Some cable companies use what is called "MAC address recording." A MAC address (MAC has nothing to do with Macintosh) is like a serial number--every computer, every switch, every router, every gadget that uses Ethernet has a unique MAC address.

With some cable companies,as soon as you plug your computer in to your cable modem for the first time, the cable modem records the MAC address of your computer. From that instant onward, that cable modem will never again work with any other computer or with any other device unless it is reset by the factory or by the cable company.

So if Comcast still does MAC address recording (they used to in the past, I don't know if they still do), your cable modem will not work with anything but your eMac--not with your router and not with any other computer.

There are two ways to resolve this. One is to work with your cable company and have them reset your cable modem. The second is to use the override MAC setting on your VT2442 so that your VT2442 uses the same MAC address as your computer.

How do I find my MAC address?

Thanks for the reply.
Since Comcast wont help me with this(they don't deal with Vonage)I guess I'll have to do the MAC overide.
How do I overide my router to use the MAC address?

Sorry but what is a MAC address? I have Windows ME and when I do the winipcfg I get....nothing that says MAC. Is it the Adapter address? It looks like this...00-E0-18-22-D6-C7. If this is what I'm looking for, how do I override the MAC setting on my VT2442?

Sorry if I sound like a complete illiterate about these things.

First get your MAC address:

How do I get my MAC address in Windows?

Next enter it into your VT2442:

With your VT2442 connected to your computer open the web management screen for the VT2442 from your web browser:

Page 13 of the user guide wrote:

Logging In to the VT2442:
1 On a computer connected to the VT2442, open a Web browser.
2 In the Address or Location field, type http://192.168.15.1 and press ENTER....
3 In the Username field, type router.
4 In the Password field, type the password (the default is “router”).
5 Click Log In to display the HOME page....

1. Click the SETUP tab.
2. Click WAN configuration.
3. Click Override MAC
4. Enter your PC's MAC address
5. Click Save

I don't have one of these, the instructions above are based on the manual.

Yes, that looks like a MAC address.

Okay, so I followed all of the instructions to install the router through my modem to my computer. After all that, I do not have an internet connection in order to access this Web Management screen for the VT2442. Is this a common problem with Vonage? This is so frustrating for what is supposed to be a "simple hook-up". How can I get to the setup for the VT2442 without having the router hooked to my computer?

The web management screen on the VT2442 is internal. It looks just like an ordinary web page and it's accessed using a web browser, but you don't need an internet connection to get to it. If your computer is hooked into the LAN side of the VT2442 and properly configured, you should be able to type the address given on page 13 of your manual and access the page.

To answer your question about complication, this is not the norm with Vonage with a setup as simple as yours. The problem is caused by the silliness of your cable company insisting on a registered MAC. If it turns out that this is, in fact, the problem, I'd call your ISP and let them know how you as a consumer feel about them causing you this kind of grief.

I'm so sorry for all the questions but could you please give me step by step instructions to access the management screen. I use the blue cable from my cable modem to the internet spot on my router. Then the yellow cable from the port1 on my router to my computer. How do I access the VT2442 mangement page from this point?
Thanks again for any help.

Well, I have tried everything and it just doesn't seem worth the hassle. If somebody could explain to me how to access the web management screen for the VT2442 maybe I could reset it or something but I followed all the above replies but without luck.

I have everything set up like the instructions...blue cable into my cable modem and into internet on my router....yellow cable from port 1 on my router to computer....power from outlet to back of router. My router blinks a green light but no internet connection. I clicked internet explorer and get cannot open internet so I then type in http://192.168.15.1 and still get the cannot access internet. What am I doing wrong?
I'm not sure how to check this..."If your computer is hooked into the LAN side of the VT2442 and properly configured, you should be able to type the address given on page 13 of your manual and access the page".

Any more help would be greatly appreciated before I finally call Vonage and cancel.
My friends and family have had no problems and love it, I just wish I could get the experience.
Thanks
