PostPosted: Thu Jul 06, 2006 1:20 am    Post subject: Moving to Russia for a year and want to have Vonage... Reply with quote Back to top

Hi
My wife and I would be moving to Russia this September and would like to have Vonage there as my primary phone for calling US and Europe. We will have a DSL line there.

I have had Vonage service for a half year now and recently took the adapter on my trip to Russia to see how it would work there. Because of the difference in plugs and outlets, when I plugged in my adapter, it burned it down and it's not working anymore.

My question is:
What adapter should I use while in Russia?
Would Linksys WRTP54G work for my phone, fax line, and wireless internet?
I am thinking of Linksys WRTP54G (would like to use if for wireless in our apt as well).

Does Vonage sell their adapters with european power cords?

I am thinking about having one Vonage number and a fax line.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would like to have it all ready by September and not burn any of devices again Smile.

Thanks

wow, good call on not using a correct power supply in a foreign country.
1. use any adapter you want, just get the correct power convertor. try radio shack or any other electronics store.
2. supposedly
3. most people have better luck with a wrt54gl with the Vonage device connected to it. the pap2 is always a popular option, but I would stick with cheapest personally.
4. no

people have had sporadic success with the wrtp54g, esp with the wireless feature. you can take the chance if you want, but I wouldn't, especially being overseas.

Thanks for the reply.

I actually just cancelled my current Vonage account and am having my wife resign up with them because there is a good UA mileage deal on new accounts.

What is the difference between wrt54gl and wrt54g? The wrt54g is offered via Vonage at sign up for $50.00? Should i go for it or do you recommend wrt54gl? Where can buy that and what is the best price?

So if I understand you correct, while using wrt54gl, I will be ok to have one Vonage line connected to it with a telephone fax machine combo?
And wireless internet would work ok?

there are a lot of people here who would love to take the time to explain what I said, because you don't understand it. however, I'm not going to. I don't mind holding hands but this is a little ridiculous, and I'm not going to call around and search websites for the best prices or whatever. you can do all of that. you can go to linksys.com or google.com and read about the devices I mentioned.
from what I gather from your posts, you're better off getting the WRTP54G from Vonage.

I guess I'll be that one, reebok. Smile

The WRT54GL is better if you plan to do heavy P2P or other services, and it has the capability to be upgraded to a very nice router. The WRT54G is an okay router, but again a WRT54GL will be better for heavier internet use. Or do you mean the WRTP54G?

Actually, its the WRTP54G

ymsbel wrote:

It all depends on how you'll be using your internet connection.

ymsbel wrote:

Look around, its really not that hard. NewEgg.com has had the WRT54GL at good prices in the past.

You will need a PAP2 in addition to the WRT54GL. You can't connect a telephone or fax machine to the WRT54GL itself. You can use a telephone/fax machine combo with the PAP2 though.

As long as its a wireless router, and you have a compatible wireless card in your computer you should be good to go!
