PostPosted: Tue Jul 04, 2006 5:26 am    Post subject: Can't open ports on the router Reply with quote Back to top

I'm connected through a shared internet connection that consist of a Linksys router BEFVP41 V2. I don't have the password for that router so i can't open ports of DMZ.

My PAP2 can't receive calls because of that.

Is there any other solution that may solve my problem?

Thanks

I don't know why you would think that you have to open ports on the router in order for your PAP2 to work.

Unless it is currently setup to block certain ports, it should work fine.

Many people (myself included) use a router in front of our Vonage device and don't need any ports setup in order for it to work. I used to own the non-VPN version of this router and never had to do anything like this in order for it to work.

Unfortunately this don't help your problem if its not working.

Based on what information you have provided, the only thing I can think to tell you to do is to do a hard reset on the router. This will cause the router to return to its default settings, including the default password. The default password is "admin". Do not use a userid.

This will let you log in to it and configure it however you like.

Please make sure that the first thing you do is to change the password so that other's don't hack in to it.

Hopefully this will let you do what you need. If you provide some more detail around why ports being open and the DMZ matter in your particular case, it may allow others to give you some more options.

Thanks a lot for the elaborated answer!

Unfortunatelly, the provider (iconnechere / deltathree) says that it's definately a ports issue.
I don't think that the router blocks certain ports, because I tried it also on my previous apartment (with a different router that wasn't configured to DMZ) and it had the same problem.

Another unfortunate problem is that since it's a shared internet connected to the entire building, I don't have the password to the ISP DSL connection. Therefore, once I hard reset the router it will forget this password and then I won't have internet at all...
Also, the building manager wouldn't give me the password or open ports because he is a primitive and unthoughtful person who believes that it will hurt other users in the building. Sad

Does someone have a suggestion how to approach this problem from the PAP2 side?

Thanks again!

Hmmm. That suggests that the ports you need are open. I don't suppose there is anywhere else with a broadband connection where you could take that PAP2 to test it?

But you did indicate that you had problems with it in another apartment. What was the solution there?

There was no solution in that other apartment - it didn't work.
Inititating a call is never a problem, and the ports seems to be open right after I initiate a call (I can receive a call right after an outgoing call is ended).
Also, sometimes I can receive a call even if I didn't make an outgoing call, and from that I deduct that there's some kind of handshake between the PAP2 and the server. My goal is to make that handshake more often and then I guess it will be solved.
Is it possible?

I don't know.

Does your service require a particular MAC ID or anything like that? If so, maybe MAC cloning is the answer, except that I don't know that the PAP2 supports it. I suspect not.

By the way, how are you connecting both your PAP2 and your computer to the service?

Your problem is with the RTP ports. Setup your line to connect to a STUN server and you should be all set. Otherwise, I'd reset the router to factory defaults and route ports 10000-15000(I think that's what the pap2's defaults are) to the pap2's IP address.

No, it's not. When you power on your PAP2 it registers to one of Vonage's SIP gateways. There's nothing you can do to change any parameter regarding that operation.

Something upstream, like a firewall in your ISP, could be killing your SIP connection, but even if they did your PAP2 should initiate a new one on its own and allow you to receive calls. If you reboot your PAP2, can you receive a call immediately after it comes up?

I also wouldn't rule out that your PAP2 is defective, but since you're in Germany and Vonage isn't going to support the use of their service in that country, you're out of luck there as well.

FYI, the router in its default settings should be all you need to make Vonage operate properly. No port forwarding is required.
