I have a RT31P2 Vonage router that sometimes from 1 to 3 times a day freezes up. My phone service always works though. My workaround has to been to Remote admin on with port 8080 then just do a SAVE CHANGES from any of the router menu's and then the 4 computers plugged into the router come back up. I do it remotely as I am off-site mostly and use remote desktop to one of the 4 computers.
Vonage has sent me a new router and Comcast has replaced the modem and still the problem exists. Comcast were extremely resistant in trying to replace the modem blaming my network instead - but it's all brand new - twice over as Vonage replaced the router and I exchanged the wireless router that is plugged into one of the ports.
I have one of the 4 ports from the RT31P2 going to a Linksys wireless hub and I have isolated the issues to the Vonage router. Surely I couldn't have 2 bad routers? |

All of the Vonage adapters make for lousy routers... best option is to get a real router and use your Vonage adapter strictly as a phone adapter. Wish it wasn't this way, but it is... |

Do you suspect then that because I am using port forwarding that is what is causing it to freeze up?
I suppose I could easily test this by swapping my wireless Linksys - put it behind modem then hardware Vonage router. |

It's probably not the port forwarding as much as it is the traffic load. RDP usually sends a ton of tiny packets, probably more than the pathetic router inside the Vonage devices can handle.
Definitely try swapping the wireless router & Vonage router and see what happens. It should stabilize. The RT31P2 also has an overheating issue which can cause reboots/random weirdness as well. |
