PostPosted: Sun Jul 02, 2006 7:06 am    Post subject: 3 Lines with 2 vt2442's Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

I have a fairly simple setup, but I am not a networking guru & I have a problem. I have a ton of bandwith so I ordered 2 business lines for my small business & then 1 personal line.

Here is my setup:

cable modem --->vt2442 #1--->vt2442 #2

My computer is connected to port 1 on vt2442 #1 & works great. The 2 business lines connected to vt2442 #1 are working great.

vt2442 #2 (blue port) is connected to port 2 of vt2442#1

The problem is that I cannot get the personal phone line on vt2442 #2 to work. I have tried just about everything including multiple resets, etc. The internet light is on but the phone line is not lit up & the power light is blinking red. When I connect vt2442 #2 directly to the cable modem, the personal phone line works fine.

When I signed up for multiple accounts/lines, the Vonage sales rep said that I could use 2 vt2442's together for 3 lines.

Thanks!

The technician is correct; this should work fine. You've already made an excellent start by verifying that VT2442#2 works when connected directly to the cable modem.

Have you tried re-booting the entire setup, powering up in the correct sequence (modem, wait, VT#1, wait, VT#2, computers)? If not do so. If the problem continues, plug a computer into the LAN side of VT#2. Access the administration page, go to tools, and hit the reset button. Does that fix it? If not, can you access the internet using the computer plugged into VT#2?

Steve thanks -

Shut down everything & re-powered up in sequence & no luck.

To your last sentence, I connected a computer to vt2442 #2 (lan) & cannot access the internet.

Wondering if I need to go into the control panel for vt2442 #1 & make changes (NAT, etc.)?

Can you access the administration page for VT#2 with the computer plugged into its LAN so that you can do that reset?

The defaults on the VTs should be to have each act as a DHCP server on its own sub-net and for each to get its address dynamically. Is that how you're still set up? If you think you are, check VT#1 and make sure that it's enabled as a DHCP server and check VT#2 and make sure that it's getting its address dynamically.

I don't have too much hope for these steps, since VT#2 works properly when plugged into the modem. That suggests that it's getting its IP dynamically, unless you've set up static addressing somewhere. The fact that your computers work when plugged into VT#1 sub-net suggest that it's issuing addresses. Still, we need to check it out.

Steve-

Reset #2 again - no luck

#1 is set up for dhcp & #2 is getting it's address dynamically.

I did set static dns server ips in the tcp/ip settings in each computer's network connection because the vt would not get them dynamically, but both vts are set at factory defaults.

Any ideas?

Thanks

This sounds like a basic routing problem to me. If VT#2 is stuck behind VT#1 Then VT#2 would have the same subnet on the outside and inside networks confusing VT#2. Is it supposed to send 192.168.15.x traffic to the outside or the inside? Typical router logic would result in one of two responses. Either it would send half the traffic one way and half the other way or it wouldsimply choose one and stick with it rendering the other NIC useless. I think they might work side-by-side, but not daisy chained unless these devices are smarter than most network equipment I know of.

----edit
I should probably suggest a solution. If you setup DHCP on VT#2 (or #1 if preferred) to hand out 192.168.16.x instead of 192.168.15.x, it should resolve the issue as you'd have 2 different network numbers.

I'm wondering why the Vonage sales rep told me they would work?

I really do not want to put them both behind another router side by side because I want the business phone lines (vt#1) to have bandwith priority.

It would be nice if someone would come out with a 3 or 4 line router combo.

Am I stuck?

Thanks

Flickerfly, thanks for jumping in with the solution. I've seen a lot of threads in here with RTP300's daisy chained the way that Wengen was daisy chaining his VT2442s, and without problems. Any idea why the VT2442 should be different in this regard?
