PostPosted: Thu Jun 29, 2006 6:37 pm    Post subject: Incoming Voice Choppy and Garbled Reply with quote Back to top

The last couple of days my Vonage conversations (incoming voice) have been choppy and garbled. I've contacted my service provider, Verizon FIOS, and they have completed multiple tests on my fiber optic line showing that it is working well. The outgoing voice is fine.

I've had Vonage for 3 years now and this is a first for me.

Here's the pertinent info about my setup:

1. Loc: Carrollton, TX
2. ISP: Verizon FIOS
3. Speeds: 15Mbit down/ 2 Mbit up
4. No Modem, router provided by Verizon for PPPoE (DLink DI-604)
5. Cisco ATA
6. Verizon provided router for PPPoE --> Firewall --> Router --> Cisco ATA
7. Choppy, garbled incoming audio.

Here is the data from your speed test:

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 11355408 bps
Upload speed: 1870176 bps
Quality of service: 97 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 124 ms
Average download pause: 1 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 45 ms
Average round trip time to server: 45 ms

Voip test statistics

Packets out of order: 0.0 %

Have any of you been seeing this kind of problem?

Your test scores look fine. What happens if you plug the Cisco directly into the Verizon router?

Hey Man,
I am running Vonage on fios. in Keller, Tx ..getting great network connection but starting last week some time incoming communication is choppy at times....but the person on the other end does not notice. I wonder if Verizon is doing some traffic shaping to discourage Vonage users?

I tried that and was getting the same result.

I tried:

1. Connecting ATA to Dlink directly + using cordless phone on house telephone network.

2. Connecting ATA to Dlink + using corded phone on house telephone network.

2. Connecting ATA to Dlink + using corded phone connected directly to ATA.

The problem seemed to disappear at about 7PM.

I have the same problem like blueorder described since last 3-4 days ago. I live in Murphy, TX and I have Verizon FIOS with 15/2MB speed.

It's work fine anytime I reset the router but start happen again after 10-15 minutes. What is going on ?

Glad to hear it.

It's rather disconcerting from a troubleshooting viewpoint. No problem locally, test results good, yet problem was elsewhere. Hmmm.

Please post the technical details listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum. You might also want to start a new thread for your problem. A lot of readers may not catch your message when it's tacked onto an existing thread.
