PostPosted: Thu Jun 29, 2006 12:01 pm    Post subject: General MAC Filtering and Setup Reply with quote Back to top

Hi, I have a few setup questions concerning me switching to Vonage, it'll be great if anyone can help:
Location: New York, Long Island
ISP: Cablevision Optimum Online (Cable)
Modem: Motorola SB4200 Surfboard
Planning to use a Motorola VT2442 or D-Link VTA
Intended Setup: Modem > Belkin F5D7230-4 Router (to computers) > Phone Adapter > Phone

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 11662816 bps
Upload speed: 1915520 bps
Quality of service: 97 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 126 ms
Average download pause: 3 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 31 ms
Average round trip time to server: 36 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 3.9 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.8 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 25
Estimated MOS score: 4.1

Well, questions are:
1) Will I be able to run Vonage w/ MAC Filtering or will I need the phone adapter's physical address?
2) Will I be able to run Vonage behind a dynamic IP address?
3) And also behind a NAT firewall?
4) Which is a better phone adapter, the Motorola VT2442 or D-Link VTA?

Thanks for all replies

The Voip stats look good...

I'd actually run the computers from the Belkin, not the Vonage adapter... The Vonage adapters seem to work best when used as standalone Voip adapters and not routers.

To answer your questions:
1) If you're filtering by MAC, you'll need to tell your Belkin router to allow the Vonage adapter's MAC address.

2) Vonage has no problems with dynamic IPs

3) NAT shouldn't pose a problem on newer routers. Some of the older routers need ports to be forwarded to make Vonage work, but I've yet to encounter one of these.

4) Ahh..difficult question. The D-link has only been out for a few weeks, the VT2442 has only been out for a few months. Initial reviews on the D-Link seem to be good, mixed reviews on the Moto.

I have the exact Belkin router and I believe it's recommended to use a Static IP with Voip for this particular router. I agree with VonageTPA and have the TA run off the Belkin.

I also use the MAC address filtering without any issue but as TPA states you need to enter the TA mac address on the Belkin.

I also incurred some issues with the TA lossing connection and I used the port forwarding to sort of direct the Voip traffic directly to the correct ports. That has seemed to solve my issues.

As for D-link vs VT2442, keep in mind that the D-link has no routing capability. If you have enough LAN ports on your Belkin to handle the D-link and all your computers that's not a problem. If not, you may want to give extra consideration to the VT2442.

1)The MAC address will be printed on the underside of the Vonage adapter, usually quite clearly.

2) If you're going to do Quality of Service/packet prioritization, then static IPs will be the best bet, BUT, it shouldn't make a difference either way. If you can set the DHCP server of your router to assign a "static" IP to a particular MAC address, that'd be ideal. If you travel with your Vonage adapter, stick with dynamic. Basically, I'd leave it as dynamic unless you experienced problems.

3) Same as #2, try it without forwarding ports. If you experience problems, then forward ports. No use making the process more complex if it doesn't warrant it.
