Just got two Vonage lines a few weeks ago for the business I work for. Also bought a new 3com NBX V3000 IP phone system for said business. We are experiencing very poor call quality (people on other end cannot hear us, we sometimes cannot hear them--choppy). Since the business is located in Bluefield, VA there is no 276 area code available. So I decided to get phone numbers that were local calls from the current job site locations. I got a Chicago number (773) and a Westfork, Arkansas number (479). On our phone system in Bluefield the Vonage lines are set to primary outbound calls and the 4 verizon lines are set to secondary outbound when the Vonage lines are on call. It seems that outbound calls made on the 479 number are clearer and less choppy. Outbound calls on the 773 number are almost worthless most of the time. Since the 773 number is out of Chicago does this mean a local Bluefield, VA call must go up to Chicago's network and back to Bluefield to be processed? Could the network traffic in Chicago be so heavy that it is affecting our call quality? I am getting a lot of complaints from employees about this service; I am starting to second guess my decision to use it. Sorry for the long post, Just want to tell the complete story. I will list all my specs below:

Location: Bluefield, VA
Voip ATA: Linksys PAP2
Phone Sys: 3Com NBX V3000 (4 verizon analog lines, 2 Vonage lines)

ISP#1 : 4seasons wireless (verified & tested 3MB down, 3MB Upload)

ISP#2 : Comcast (Verified & Tested 8MB down, 900K upload)

Firewall/router: Watchguard Firebox Edge with WAN failover

I don't know how the different area codes could be affecting your voice quality, but I can tell you that, in my experience, the voice quality can be very good indeed. My Voip test scores are not as good as yours, and we have five Vonage lines running on that connection with excellent results.

The PAP2 would not be my first choice in phone adapters, but it is a mature product, and the there are a lot of people out there using them with good results.

I'm not familiar with the 3Com NBX V30, so I guess I would have to try to get it out of the mix for testing purposes. Also, Vonage phone adapters are inexpensive, relatively speaking, so if isolating the Vonage line from the phone system did not bring any improvement, I would probably swap out the phone adapter, just to see if it changes anything.

My first choice would be the LinkSys RTP300, but the WRTP54G has the same chipset, so it is a good second choice. I would say to steer clear of the Motorola VT2442 and the LinkSys RT31P2.

I believe that the PAP2 has the same chipset as the RT31P2, but for for reasons that are unclear to me, folks seem to like the PAP2...possibly because they have never heard just how good Voip can sound with the two boxes that I mentioned above. Wink

I don't know about the new D-Link experience with that one...

I was told to just get an ATA adapter because my ISP who has Vonage said he ran into some issues when using the Vonage supplied Router/adapter behind his firewall and other equipment. I have a second PAP2 device that hasn't been installed yet. Can I just swap them out or do I need to go online and change the hardware settings with my Vonage account to recognize the new MAC address of the adapter?

I have four Vonage devices behind another router (with firewall enabled), and none of them has caused a problem in that configuration except for the VT2442. Hence my recommendation to avoid that particular device.

As to swapping out the PAP2 that you already have, you will have to call Vonage tech support to get them to transfer your service to the other device. Unfortunately, Vonage does not give us access to the tools that we would need to change it ourselves.

Pecvessels, you have 2 ISPs? Based on the speed results, the tests you performed seem to be for 4seasons. Is this the ISP serving the Vonage adapter? Does changing ISPs change the quality of the service?
