We are getting cable internet (comcast) tomorrow and I plan on switching to Vonage. My wife wants to keep our current phone number because it's easy to remember but I don't really want to hassel with getting our number ported over and paying for both phone services for what could be 3-5 months.

I know you can pick your area code (ours is on the list) but is there a way to select form a list of available numbers?

A couple of things:
1) You can pick the area code and the city, but not the number.
2) I doubt if your port will take months, it is usually weeks or just days with few exceptions.
3) If your port does take longer than 30 days, Vonage will normally give you a credit.

I hope this helps.

Thank you. I guess just reading through these forums gives a person the worst case scenarios versus the normal procedures.

This is true, most people find this forum as a result of looking for a solution to a problem, and not because they love Vonage so very much that they just have to gush about it to an audience that feels the same. Most of the regulars came here for help, found it, then stuck around to "pay back" for the help by helping the next crop of newbies. Wink

Here's what I'd do, if I were you:

1. Get Vonage. Don't worry about porting over a number just yet.

2. Try it out for a while, and make sure it works for you.

3. Port your number over as a VIRTUAL number. This will cost you $10 plus $5 a month.

4. Once the transfer is complete, swap your virtual and main numbers, and cancel the virtual number.

This will cost you another $10-20, plus a little extra time on your old line at whatever you are paying a month, but you get to try out Vonage using their assigned number first, and if things don't work out you can cancel Vonage without any risk of losing your old phone number or having it disabled while in the process of transferring back.

You were a newbie once? I thought you were always old, grizzled, and wise. Lol

Old? Check. Getting more so every day.

Grizzled? Well, I have been mistaken for a grizzly bear a few times. Downside: darts hurt like hell. Upside: All the honey you can eat until you are released... Downside: ... 100 miles from civilization.

Wise? Wise-arse, maybe. Wink

Compared to NateHoy, Dan, and others in the "Mile-High" club, I'm just a little wiener boy. I'll admit though, the thought of all the honey you can eat has got me hungry and sick at the same time. Very Happy

Not such a silly question, and I think you got your answer. In addition to the other suggestions and advice, let me add mine:

Get the Vonage service but before porting your existing number, simply forward it to your new Vonage number. Basically you will be able to use your existing number right away, but you will be able to learn if you like the Vonage service without the hassles of un-doing everything if you don't.

If everything works as you want, you can then port your number.

(Besides, Vonage might give you an easier number that you really like.)
