The block that was executed was well palnned and is technically fairly sophisticated. They blocked Skype which is not easy. The Regulatory Authority had to be planning this for some time. Any pressure that can be put on them has to be well planned.
The open internet was sold as a huge advantage of locating there. People should also start pressuring the real estate developers to the extent that they can to also do what they can. One Emiratee screaming is worth more than 50 ex pats.

Jumanji (and all) - I have been off line for a while but nice to see you guys are still keeping the pressure on. The petition (www.petitiononline.com/uaevoip is still up and gathering signatures. I emailed 7 Days to publish it but guess what - no response.
My Skype still seems to be working on DIC - is anyone elses?

hey guys,
I've been reading this forums regularly to see if anyone got a way to make
Voip
work in this country. Although I dont live in the DIC area, i thought if you guys found a 'magic' way to make it work i'd be the benefactor. And then yesterday my
Voip
services started working. I'm using
Vonage
and another service as well. I"m actually serviced by etisalat, but at teh same time the proxy servers are still blocking all 'unauthorized' websites. It's really weird. Similarly
www.testyourvoip.com
works for me now. This might mean that good luck is on your doorstep too.

clsaah, so you're saying that your

there is a way around it - but its complex (requires good IT skills) and does not always work. I have spent the better part of two days - and in the process destroyed a router.

The company will launch its
Voip
service in the UAE, where it is currently banned, as soon as the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) rules that
Voip
is legal, slated to be in the first quarter of 2007. The question remains however whether the service will remain free or will be available only via etisalat, the incumbent provider, or via du, the new operator, when it becomes operational.
