I don't think Skype uses any real specific ports, so if they're succesfully blocking Skype, they're either blocking a registration server address, or they're filtering/blocking at the packet level. If that's the case, VPN is probably your only hope.

I am able to use Inphonex Voip service. This only works with a a third party VPN service I now subscribe to. So Soft phone Voip is possible. The only thing is to get the Vonage adapter Linksys RT31P2 to work! an easily said notion?

Hi,

VonageTPA has mentioned that VPN may be our hope to use the Vonage adapter. So where are our technical people in this forum to help us? Please try to help us to use the adapter.

Thank you in advance.

I totally agree, Vonage technical need to help, as if this is not sorted out soon, I know of many who will discontinue the service. I for one have spent a total of seven hours on long distance premium international calls to Vonage technical with nothing to show for them yet!

PostPosted: Mon Aug 14, 2006 11:28 am    Post subject: Issues with Tecom (hopefully not permanent) Reply with quote Back to top

We used to live in an area serviced by Etisalat, and i've used my Vonage adapter there successfully until the begining of Jan 06, at which point we moved to Emirates Hills and continued the use of Vonage without error....until today! Basically, there's no dial tone and after spending 30min on a direct call with customer service, we were unable to resolve the issue. In the past, i've spoken to Tecom reps and they've all given me the same answer "uh...no we don't block ANY ports" so i had no reason to suspect that something was wrong with the ISP either. Anywho, looking for a plausible explanation i concocted my own theory. Yesterday, we received a text message from Tecom notifying us that some 'changes' were being made to the service, i called and requested more details and the guy explained that the net service wouldn't switch off, but they were upgrading some systems to better regulate the bandwidth. Anyway, point is that "certain changes" were made. So in light of this knowledge i called Tecom again today to verify if they NOW had any ports blocked, and to my releif i got the same answer "no sir, we don't block anything" . So, then what was wrong? The Vonage guy did his diagnostics on his end and suspected my ISP was at fault, but my ISP claims nothing's wrong...a bit of a conundrum! Anywho, here's my theory:
We have a private IP address (configured like a LAN) set for now, i think (and it can become difficult to verify this unless i get in touch with the right tech), up until their "changes" were made, all private IP address had open incoming access. Now, they PROBABLY have a new firewall type thing up for private opted IPs. I'm gonna go to their office tomorrow to upgrade to a public IP at a cost of 300dhs and HOPEFULLY that'll resolve the issue... will let u guys know if there's any progress on that....

hope this post helped any others facing similar problems.
