I think we should register for a protest against the Korean government just like everyone else in this country Lol I doubt it would do anything, but it'd be funny to watch.

Will this block affect folks that are living in Seoul but not on a base? My brother-in-law lives in Seoul but is currently visiting the US for a couple of weeks. While here he bought a Linksys Vonage phone adapter and signed up for the Unlimited $24.99 a month Vonage plan. He is not a member of the US military. He is a US citizen working for an American company in Seoul. He lives in an apartment in Seoul and uses a Korean ISP for his broadband DSL service. Should he cancel his Vonage service and get his money back on his phone adapter from the local store that he bought it from? We have been reading this board and are currently under the impression that the Voip block only applies to US military folks living at a base or other military installation. Thanks!

It applies to everyone. Military or otherwise. Funny how they didn't seem to care too much until the Korean internet companies came out with their own Voip services here.

HotSpotVPN

They have Voip QOS in their VPN.

That does it, period.

Enjoy

I'm wondering if VPNs like hotspotvpn requires that the computer be turned on 24-7 to use the phone service....can anyone tell me this? If htat's the case the rise in electricity usage will outweigh any benefits/cost savings of using Voip in korea.

Also...are there any other VPNs that offer this service for a lower price? I heard as low as 6$ a month but i can't seem to find them..

The computer won't need to be on 24-7, but you'll need a special router.

PublicVPN is $5/month, HotSpotVPN $8/month, arfan24's solution is $6/month.

You need a router that has a PPTP client. I've been messing with a WRT54G running DD-WRT (3rd party firmware) for a while, someone else has a WRV54G, another with a WRT54GL and DD-WRT, but none of us have been able to get it to work. Arfan24 says he has gotten it to work, but I haven't been able to find a place (in the US) to buy the router he uses.

I've been beta testing HotSpotVPN's new product. They have a broadband router with a vpn AND SIP client built-in and you can either plug a phone directly into the box and configure it for a sip provider like broadvoice or plug your Vonage ATA into the built in ethernet switch. They say it will be on their web site next week but if you email them I bet they would let you try it.
