| I've been beta testing HotSpotVPN's new product. They have a broadband router with a vpn AND SIP client built-in and you can either plug a phone directly into the box and configure it for a sip provider like broadvoice or plug your vonage ATA into the built in ethernet switch. They say it will be on their web site next week but if you email them I bet they would let you try it. |
The real question is does it work? |

Of course, and the second question would be how well does it work. They have what they call "encryption servers" on the east and the west coast of the US. The best sounding option is to use a computer with a USB headset and hotspotvpn2 which uses UDP to create an SSL vpn. There are actually some articles about it.
Google
ssl vpn improve voip
and you will get a lot of articles. You can choose between TCP and UDP.
Next best is the HotSpotVPN-1 solution. If you have a really good connection it sounds almost as good as the UDP/SSL connection. I know they are prioritizing voip inside of their network. I've tried the California server and I'm in Virginina. It sounded good and I cound recieve and make calls. Pretty cool. |

Sure, a country can block VOIP, but, really, data is data. Why should a packet of data which when reconstituted at the receiving end as a picture of your 2 month old nephew have a different status than data which is a packet of encoded voice information? I think it is strange that a government or any other entity should differentiate between packets of digital data simply because of what that data was before it was digitized and because of what it is after it is reconstituted.
Data is data, and all data should be neutral on the Internet. |

It works. They have gone live on the website today so they are out of Beta. I put the "does it work" thing in the beta tester's suggestion box. and they responded. They are going to post a recording made to a voice mail account from within and without the tunnel. You will be able to download the wav file and "quantify" the sound quality with your own ears. Vonage should buy these guys... |
