I recentlty discovered that my routers firewall was turned off and has been for some time. I turned it on and immediately began having problems with Vonage such as
1) unable to phone voicemail 2) frequent dropped calls 3) frequent "no one there" calls
I tried setting the PAP2 DHCP off, setting the IP to a static one, forwarding the ports 5060-5061, 53, 69, and 10000-20000 but then I could not make any calls. Well let me clarify that. I could make the call but I had no incmoing traffic. I could not hear anything from the other end. No ringing, no voice - nothing. I then tried turning off the port forwarding and setting the ststic IP in the DMZ of the router so it should appear as if the firewall was off to the PAP2 but I still could not make calls or check the voicemail. So for the time being I am forced to turn the firewall back off but I need to get this resolved. Does anyone have a suggestion or had a similar problem and got it resolved? |

The problems you're experiencing are with the SMC router's implementation of a firewall, and a rather pathetic implementation at that. We've seen this type of problem happen with multiple router vendors, including Linksys, Netgear, and SMC, but usually only certain models. I'd suggest going to SMC's website and seeing if they have a newer firmware version for your router and load it on there and see if that fixes it. This has fixed many of the other routers. If it doesn't fix your problem, call up SMC and complain -- it IS their problem, regardless of what tech support says. Unfortunately, Vonage tech support isn't going to be able to help you on this one -- their device is working properly. |

Did you happen to power cycle your router and TA after making your changes? |
