I just finished installing my new system and proudly informed my wife of this wonderful new world. She looked at me and and asked how the rest of the world, that had our old telephone number, would now be able to find us. I had tried to get my existing number but it was unavailable.
I looked at her and said ....let me get back to you on that.

As stupid as this sounds, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can overcome this issue. Obviously, if I was moving within the phone system they would provide my new number to folks calling the old number for some period of time.

so the number isnt portable then? well you could drops all extras on your current line hook it up to a voice mail or answering machine that answered right away saying "phone number xxx xxx xxxx has changed to xxx xxx xxxx please make a note of this as this number will soon not be available. you coulod email/snailmail freds and family letting them know. you could fwd your old number to your new one until you got everyone knowing about the new one. my first answer is probably one of the best will be paying for the other service as long as you keep it though

Your local phone company might offer call forwarding. Look it up on thier website.

An example of how it might work might work follows:

  • Dial *72 on your old line
  • When you hear a new dial tone, dial your vonage line #
  • Pickup your Vonage line
  • Hang up both lines

To end the call forwarding dial *73 on your old line.

On the Vonage sign up page, you can enter your telephone number and it will tell you right away if you can port it over to Vonage (keep it). You can do this without entering any credit card information or any strings attached.

I signed up with Vonage several months ago and kept my Southwestern Bell Telephone number. I still look back on that day with fond memories, dropping SBC was one of the best things I have done in a long time.
