1) Oregon
2) Comcast Cable
3) 8539kbps down 353kbps up (via Speakeasy to Seattle)
4) Linksys BEFCMU10v4 cable modem
5) Linksys WRTP54G phone adapter (wireless is disabled)
6) Network path is as follows: vtech phone plugs into the WRTP54G which plugs into a Foundry workgroup switch which connects to a Linksys BEFSR11 router which connects to the Linksys BEFCMU10v4 cable modem.

7) The primary issue is that when making calls, at random times (it could be 2 minutes into a call, it could be 1 hour into a call) the call will drop and take my Internet connection with it. All lights on the cable modem, router and phone adapter appear normal but a quick browser page test will show that the Internet is not functional. During this time I still get a dial tone and if I have voice mail I can still hear the beeping tone indicating so, but I cannot get any calls to connect (just dead air). At this point I can either wait 5 minutes or so for everything to come back online (eventually the Internet will start working again and then the phone line 1 light on the adapter will go out and then eventually come back online) or I can reboot all the devices (router, phone adapter, cable modem). Except for the random call drops and death of the Internet my call quality is exceptional.

It sounds like something intermittent with either your IP or your local network. Do you actually have to reboot everything to get things working again, or will recycling the power on just the WRT do it? If you plug a computer directly into the BEFSR11 will it get service there without rebooting anything? Does this problem ever occur when you're not making a phone call?

Thanks for your reply Steve. I don't actually have to reboot everything to get it back and working. In fact if I do nothing at all things will come back online on their own. I've noticed that either way takes about the same amount of time.

This situation (loss of Internet) only occurs when using the Voip. Just surfing the Internet etc. does not cause this to happen. Only when a phone call has been made and is in progress will this happen and the amount of time on the call before this happens varies.

When I first got Vonage service I never had this problem. It has only been recently (within the last month) that it has become a regular occurance.

I think what I might try is replacing the BEFSR11 with a wireless router that I have, as the wireless router has ethernet ports unlike the BEFSR11. This would eliminate another hop in the path. I'm doubtful that is the issue but willing to give it a try.

One common cause of this is that MAC address cloning may be turned on in the WRTP54G, and mimicing another device on your network. If this is the case, Vonage will work just fine until the other device (generally your primary PC) asserts itself, then Vonage drops. Then the other device drops when Vonage asserts itself. Two devices on the same LAN segment with the same MAC = bad news.

Check that, just in case.

How old is the BEFSR? I've been getting about 3-4 years max. life out of those before they start doing weird things.

The BEFSR11 has no ethernet ports?? What does it have?

I should have asked this before. Is your phone a 2.4 GHz cordless? If so it could be interferring with the WRTP54G wireless function and causing network crashes during phone calls.

Steve,

Well the BEFSR11 does have Ethernet ports but not in the sense of a switch. It has a port that connects to the cable modem and a port that connects to my Foundry switch. This model of router did not have a built in 4-port switch.

My phone is a 2.4Ghz phone but the wireless capability of the WRTP54G has been disabled and is not operational.

Mine is probably about 3-4 years old. I'll probably discontinue it's use and utilize the Linksys wireless router that I have as it i much newer than the old BEFSR11.

NateHoy - Thanks for the advice on that. I will check and make sure that is not the case. Things would make total sense if it is the case.

So I checked the MAC address cloning and it was turned off. I've actually been able to make calls all day without a single hiccup. I am still suspicious about the BEFSR11 router and it's ability to keep up with Voip traffic levels. I'll be replacing it soon to see if removing it makes any difference.
