I live in China. Purchased the WRTP54G adapter while in the US, and installed in China so I could have a local US number. The router replaced a DLink 704P router. Many ISPs in China use FTTB or Fiber to the Building for internet service. This acts similar to ADSL as it requires a username and password to connect. Router was set up with PPOE connection. Everything worked fine until yesterday. Something happened to the router overnight, as it now resets itself every 5 seconds. The LEDs flash on and off sporadically. I tried resetting to no avail. The router could no longer connect over PPOE - claims it is not able to establish a connection. I verified the connection is alive and well by connecting with my old router. Even using the WRT54G in a passive mode - anytime I plug a cable into the WAN connector - the device constantly resets every 5 seconds. As a result of all this - the phone does not work. Now the WRTP54G is sitting behind the router acting as a hub - but it is not able to establish phone service.

Device firmware is .062. I have not made any changes to the device since I installed. As I mentioned before, it was working fine for 1 week and then started acting up. Any ideas?

When you say that the router is re-setting every few seconds, I assume that you're talking about the WRT, not the D-link. Correct?

You say that the resetting starts any time that you plug a cable into the WAN port. Is that true even if there's nothing on the other end of that cable? If so, it would suggest a physical issue with the WAN jack- bent wires or something broken for example.

I'll assume for the moment that the re-setting only happens if a cable is plugged into the WAN port and the other end is plugged into the functioning D-link. Is this correct? You say that you've re-set the WRT. Is that a hard reset using the button on the back of the unit? If so it should now be in its factory default mode and set up to get its IP dynamically and PPPOE disabled. Can you now plug into the WAN port without getting the constant resetting?

D-Link is working fine. I am only using it because the WRT fails to connect to the PPOE. WAN cable is fine - since I have used the same cable to establish connection via the D-Link router. True, WAN cable must be plugged into either the wall jack or one of the hub ports on the DLINK. It seems if the WRT sees any activity on the WAN port, it starts resetting. Tried both hard reset button and soft reset via HTML interface. After I rest the device, I changed the default connection back to PPOE and still have failures. Now the device is getting its IP address from the DLink router. Even in this mode, if I plug a cable into the WAN port and the other end into the DLink hub, the device resets every 5 seconds or so. If the wireless function is enabled, you can see the access point appear and go away at the same interval.

Is the D-link set up as a DHCP server for its subnet? Assuming it is, if you disconnect everything from the Linksys except the ethernet cable from the Linksys WAN to the D-link LAN, do you still get resets? If so, plug a computer into a Linksys LAN port and access the admin page. Try disabling the wireless function and then see if you still get the constant resetting. If you still get the resetting at this point, I would judge the Linksys to be bad.
