PostPosted: Sun Jun 25, 2006 5:39 pm    Post subject: ping results example Reply with quote Back to top

Here’s what it looks like (I just ran it on my computer):

C:\>ping -l 1200 -n 100 www.yahoo.com

Pinging www.yahoo.akadns.net [68.142.197.73] with 1200 bytes of data:

Reply from 68.142.197.73: bytes=1200 time=60ms TTL=53
Reply from 68.142.197.73: bytes=1200 time=44ms TTL=54
(and it does this 98 more times)

Then it gives you a summary:

Ping statistics for 68.142.197.73:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 23ms, Maximum = 89ms, Average = 40ms

This is an OK connection. No packet loss. But a little more variability in latency than you’d like. I’d sooner have an average of 50 ms (slower) with less variability – not bouncing all the way from 23 ms to 98 ms or somewhere in between.

Vonage CS had me run this when I was having some voice QOS issues. At that time I was having >10% packet loss and latencies were sometimes >200 ms. I then put in a service call to my ISP and once Cox fixed the Internet quality, the voice problems went away.

I tried running the test you told me to..see link below

and it made my computer go wack-o...so i had to close out of it 2x...should i try it again?

I've also had some problems with the test causing some problems. You may have to upgrade to the latest version of Java to fix it. he programmer is also looking at issues.

In the meanwhile, try running a test call to Boston at www.testyourvoip.com and post the detailed results here. Also, you can try just repeating the forum Voip test. With my computer it caused problems about half the time and worked the other half.

Okay, here are the results of the test from the DOS window on my computer. I'm not sure what this means...can anyone tell me if this is the cause of my problems?

What this tells you is that (at the time you ran this ping test, at least) your internet connection was probably OK (no packet loss, low latency not too much jitter). It's not as good as the test that froze up your computer, but it's a reasonable approximation.

You might want to run the following, as suggested by Steve48:
www.testyourvoip.com
and post the results.

You described your equipment as including Linksys wireless router - is this the phone adapter, too? (If so, what model?)
If not, what phone adapter.

Also, how are they connected, starting at the MoDem?

Hello,
Below are the answers to your questions, and the results of the test.

Yes, we have a phone adapter seprate from the router. The phone adapter is also LINKSYS(with 2 ports for VOIP).

The set-up from the modem is: from the modem, the LINSYS wireless routher is pluged in...from the wireless router the phone adapter is pluged in from that. Is that enough detail? Let me know if you need more.

Thanks!
