If the adapter was ordered from Vonage, then yes its locked to the original owner's account. If it was bought at a retail store, its fine, as long as its new.

There are some sellers who claim to be affiliates and want to get referrals, and I really don't know how they stack up.

Thank you, arcking, for your response!

I would also like to share some experiences I've had this week on trying to get a VT2442:

1) Going to CompUSA & Circuit City (both who are authorized retails stores) -- I gave clerks at each store the make & model, and neither store had it in their stock databases.

2) Called up Radio Shack (1-800-843-7422) to speak with someone after not being able to find it on their website -- she had no record of the Motorola VT2442.

3) Looking on the motorola.com site and finding the VT2400, but being unable to purchase it online.

4) Coming reeeelly close to bidding on eBay for it -- glad I didn't!!

It took me a couple of E-mail threads with Vonage before I got this message:

"...Sorry for the delay in responding. In response to your email, in order to get the Motorola VT2442 device it has to be ordered through us. The cost of this router is $79.99 plus shipping and handling. If you would like to replace this device please let me know and I will charge your account and get a device out to you."

(Well, I wouldn't have tried steps 1, 2, and 3 if it hadn't been for Vonage FIRST telling me to go purchase the adaptor at an authorized retail dealer. Confused ) Ah well... hope it arrives soon!

I saw a bunch of these at Walmart yesterday, next to the WRTP's.

This good news for those who still shop at WalMart. Idea

(I haven't shopped at WalMart for over a year.)

I bought the VTech phone off eBay and called Vonage today to switch it to my account and they did it. Here is what to do:

1. Have the seller call Vonage and ask them to remove the device's MAC address from their account and to put a note in their account stating that they give permission to you to use the device.

2. Make sure you know the regestered users name and Vonage phone number the device was originally linked to. Call Vonage Technical Support and ask for Tier 2 Technical Support. Explain to them that a 'friend' gave you their phone adapter and you want to be able to use. They should ask for the MAC address, and may have you verify your 'friend's' name and Vonage phone number. They should then create a support ticket for the MAC address to be moved to your account. They will give you a support ticket number and make sure you write it down. If you have any issues with this you will need to give them this number. In about eight hours the phone adapter should work.

Good Luck!

I don't recommend people taking that gamble. There's NO guarantee that every Vonage person will follow that. You can keep calling back, and trying, but I fear that by and large, this wouldn't work for the masses. Therefore, just don't buy the darn things on Ebay, and eventually people will get the hint and slow down on selling them. It's BS that people get burned by sellers who A) Don't read the Vonage TOS or understand it B) Don't care and just want some money back because their pissed at Vonage. It's just not right.

I don't know about the 8 hrs, LOL, but that's the only way it could work. And be upfront about it!! Too many dubb-ass customers call for activation/swap and go crazy with CS, insisting it's a valid router. Finally it's revealed to be ebay/whatever and CS tells the Customer to get permission IN WRITING from the prev. owner. I know - that's what we did when I was in CS.

"IN WRITING" Yeah, like Ebay sellers are going to do that, once the auction is over and they have the cash.

Oh, I know, there policy is what has to be adhered to by C.S. I just think it's funny that, by and large, most sellers probably won't provide that to a buyer, citing something like, "I said in the auction it was AS IS."
