Yep, that's how it goes... I've had no trouble with the WRT54GS (v1.0) thus far. Personally, I'm rather fond of the little PAP2 adapter. It has no routing functions, but it works and is small enough to toss into my laptop bag. |

The WRTP54G is the only wireless router I know of with Vonage Voip built in.
I have one, and for my needs it is a terrible router. It is, however, quite an excellent Vonage Voip adapter, and many people find it to be an acceptable router. It only works if you keep demands on it fairly light, and you have enough bandwidth (upstream, most importantly) that you're not likely to run out.
If you are an existing Vonage customer, and you are just looking to add Wireless to your network, then you have a few basic choices:
1. Purchase a WRT54GL and add aftermarket firmware that makes it a really, really good router for the price. http://vonage.nmhoy.net/wrt54gl.html
2. Purchase a router with the StreamEngine chip.
(in the case of 1 and 2, you'd put your new router connected directly to your Internet connection, and your Vonage device or router would go behind it and do only Vonage duty).
3. Keep your existing Vonage router, if you like it and it does what you need, and get a Wireless Access Point.
(or a WRT54GL or other wireless router, and simply turn off the DHCP server, and run a wire from a LAN port on your existing Vonage router into a LAN port of your new router instead of the WAN port, and turn it into a WAP)
If you're a NEW customer, get the WRTP54G, if they are giving it away for free. Try it out. It's a GREAT Vonage device, excellent sound quality. And the bright blue lights give you that "I live on an airport runway" feeling.
If it doesn't work as a router, turn off the wireless, and put it behind a better router. |
