I have been using the UtStarcom F1000 for a few months now and I am pretty happy with it over all. I live in an area where almost everyone has OPEN wi-fi! I have been able to leave my cell phone at home and use my F1000 from my home to work (if I stop to make the call). The only problem I am having is when I enable any type of encryption on my router. It doesn't matter if I use WEP, WPA, TKIP, etc... The phone will register with Vonage at first then after the first call or if the phone is just left on for 45 min or so it drops the connection and just says registering via. ... I have to power the phone off and back on to get it to register again. I also noticed a huge drop in sound quality when using encryption. These problems happen at home via Buffalo WHR HP G54, at work via Linksys, or at my neighbors via Netgear. Unlike 90% of the people in my state I don't want to leave my network open, even with MAC filtering, but I can't risk missing calls because my network is secure. Incase you ask I have disabled 11g protection. My router wont even let the phone connect when enabled anyway. On a side note does this phone use port 10000 as well. Thanks allot! Very Happy

What software version is running in your phone? There were reported problems with WPA in release 5.1vo, but I believe those were fixed in 5.5vo or 5.8vo. I believe that Vonage pushes the releases out to registered phones, so yours should be updated - though you never know for sure.

As far as ports - the phone does use port 10000. For audio uplink (phone to Vonage) it negotiates the port with Vonage per call - normally in the 10K to 20K range, but 5K to 64K is supported in the phone. For audio from Vonage, the default in the phone is 10010, but Vonage can change that to anythingin the 5K to 64K range.

I just checked and its using v. 5.50vo. If there is ver 5.8 or anything higher they havent updated my phone. Also they seem to have changed the factory reset code. 888888 and utvonpsw no longer work. Any thoughts. Thanks, Jay.

888888 is the phone's "local" security code - that should still be the same but is only of value if you "lock" the phone when you turn it off (some cell phones offer the same thing) and is also of value for the web server interface if you want to log in to add access point details.

The admin password is unique to the phone and the Vonage config server sets that and controls is - it is a pretty long, random string of digits. I have seen (infrequent) reports of being able to get that password from Vonage customer service, and I know of no other way to get it.

I think I am having similar problems, I just got a Wifi F1000 phone a few days ago to try out.
Calls are dropped randomly after 10 minutes and range of WiFI is no more than 20-30feet. My wireless laptops and camera have a longer range.
I use 128 BIT WPA encryption. Voice quality is better than the regular Vonage line.

Any advice or recommendation is greatly appreciated. Vonage made some modification to the packet size and CODEC. I don't know what that will do... The phone seems to be limited to a small range. I need to do more testing...

I have not had any problem with WEP and have not seen any reported problems. One possibility on the range is that there are other access points on the same channel in the area. The phone runs at lower power than a PC or probably than the camera - since it needs to stay in contact with the internet all the time (versus the camera that uploads data and turns off WiFi - and it does not have a PC size battery. Also, PCs and Cameras can run a bit "warm" when WiFi is active without causing concern, while a warm phone is more of a problem.

I have no idea why you would change CODECs, though you could save some bandwidth with that if that is a problem. My recommendation would be to try changing WiFi access point channels to see if there is anything quieter - one way to tell is if you scan with a PC, you can check which channel other access points in the area may be using. Then pick one that is used less. You should normally pick from 1, 6, or 11 - since these are channels that do not overlap each other. The other channels overlap.

How do I find out what channels are used on other networks?
I use 6 on my D-Link.

Does my Uniden Wireless Phone and Wireless Garage Door opener maybe causing the range issue.

You can see what other access points are using by going to "Details" under Intel/ProSet Wireless, if you have that on your PC. If you have a different wireless management package on your PC, it likely has the same function, but maybe by a different name. Channel 6 is what comes out of the box on most access points. You can try Channel 1 or Channel 11 to see if there is any improvement.

A Uniden cordless phone would result in range reduction if it is a 2.4GHz phone. If it is 5.8GHz or 900MHz, it should be OK.

It is unlikely that a garage door opener would cause a problem, because it does not transmit very often. Similarly a microwave oven could cause trouble, though only when it is running (not likely so often).

Garage door openers are in the ~330-450Mhz range depending on the maker/model. A few other things to look out for are cheap wireless security cams / video senders, which also operate on 2.4Ghz. Some baby intercoms & weather stations operate on these frequencies as well.

I was like you also. I had problems setting my wireless encryption to 128-Bit WPA. After a while, the screen would say "Registering". I played with everything on my wireless setting to try to get it to work. I eventually got sick and tired, and had Vonage send me out a new phone. What I DID get out of a tech, is that the phones would only work with 64-Bit WEP. So, with me wanting any kind of encryption, I decided to do that. So far, it's Always connected. I have never seen the "Regietering" screen. I DO however power-cycle my phone about once a week.

Hope that helps.
