Hi,
This questions are for users who may successfully registered and using Vonage in India. I appreciate your response to the queries posted below. Thanks a bunch in advance.
I recently sent a vonage adapter PAP2 to my home in Hyderabad, India. My parents were using a SIFY Broadband connection. I found out that the SIFY uses a "fixed wireless" (http://www.sifybroadband.com/how_it_works.html) and have the MAC Address locked up to the connection i.e. the system would not register anything other than MAC Address that is registered during installation . I had the MAC Address based lock removed but that didnt cause the connection to come up. After hooking up the adapter, LEDs on power line seem to periodically blink blue(every few secs) whereas the Ethernet LED is Solid Blue. The LED for Phone line on the Adapter is not turned on. Do you know what the reason could be?
Based on other issues with local area ISP, we plan to move to BSNL DataOne connection. (ADSL).
DSL modem that would be provided by the BSNL. DataOne plan that we plan to use is Home#500. (http://www.bsnl.co.in/service/dataone_tariff.htm) Now, we plan to rent a ADSL modem for 2-3 months time before buying one. Now, I have the following questions.
1) It is confusing at times, when BSNL mentions about modem and router interchangeably in their website. My question is: Does BSNL modem have router capabilties or do I need to hookup a router separately if i want to hook up a PC and Vonage adapter PAP2 to the same line?. I have been told that I would need to enter the user-id and password everytime I need to access the DSL connection. This info should be stored somewhere on the modem or router or PAP2. So, if the modem acts a router as well, then should it just only matter that I hookup the PAP2 and it would start working. If the modem is not router then I need to hook up a separate router between DSL and PAP2, correct?
2) Assuming that I will use this connection only for Vonage service(no PCs hooked), is there a way to store user-id and password on PAP2 for the DSL service.
3) Are you aware of the statistics where there is a convesion between minutes talked to actually transmittted/received bytes. For example, could someone point out if talking/receiving one minute translates to number of upload and download bytes(not download or upload rate please!) I need this information to plan to broadband plan that we should use.
4) is a speed of 256kbps upload/download suffice requirement for Vonage?
Thanks again.

Sify: Did you register your router MAC with SIFY again? Call SIFY & ask them to do that for ya.
BSNL
1. It basically depends of the modem/router you have got from BSNL. If you have got type 1 modem, that has one USB & Ethernet port. Ideally, your connection should be :-> BSNL Modem > PAP2 > PC/Phone. No routers needed between your PAP2 & Modem.
2. Yes, you need to enter your login credentials in PPoE. Search this forum, there are many step by step tutorials on how to configure. I would suggest you to go for new "Home900" scheme which has unlimited data transfer / 24hrs a day @ 256 Kbps. Its Rs.900 monthly. You can ask the BSNL person to configure your modem to stay online 24hrs which will save you some time & pain.
3. If you go for Home900 never mind about conversion. Anyways, search this forum again, there were excelled postings in the past which had the math.
4. 256Kbps is more than enough. To be on safer side, you can login into Vonage account & use the bandwidth saver option to save more bandwidth without losing voice quality.

Thanks for your reply. I have some follow-up comments/questions.
"1. It basically depends of the modem/router you have got from BSNL. If you have got type 1 modem, that has one USB & Ethernet port. Ideally, your connection should be :-> BSNL Modem > PAP2 > PC/Phone. No routers needed between your PAP2 & Modem."
I am little confused by your schematic digram of BSNL Modem>PAP2> PC/Phone
My LinkSYS PAP2 adapter has only one ethernet port that is for incoming ethernet link from the Modem/router. How can I hookup from PAP2 to PC? There are no outgoing Ethernet ports.
I was planning to have both PAP2 and PC online... This was the following setup I was considering..
BSNL Modem->Router-> PAP2, PC
i.e. two links from Router
if you have better schematics please let me know.
Thanks for your advice on other issues. |

Oops! my bad. I was in the pretext of Linksys WRT54GP2 router.
Your right, Ideally, it should be BSNL Modem > Router(PPoPe Configured & DHCP enabled) > PAP2 & PC but you can buy Type 3 modem from BSNL which has 4 ethernet outputs. You could plug in PAP2 in one port & PC on another port.
The availability of this modem is YMMV. |

So, Type3 Modem has a router built into it? If so, i should be able to configure the Type3 with PPPOE & DHCP Enabled and it should work. |
