Or here's a crazy idea... write them a letter. Cancel your service in writing and then dispute the charges on every bill forward. It isn't that hard.

It seems some people find that incredibly hard and unreasonable!

Call them, cancel, and dispute charges. There is a big difference between disputing charges and reporting your card as lost. Big difference.

Multiple hoops? If you call pressing numbers on an IVR to get to the cancellation department "hoops" then that's too bad.

If this is too "difficult", just send a certified, return-receipt letter to Vonage, along with copy of a recent bill (make sure the acct #'s on there) with your wish to cancel service. No company will attempt to worm their way out of a letter sent in this way.

My service was cancelled back in 2004 without the least bit of effort on my part. The service was terminated instantly.

Of course the problem was - I didn't want my service cancelled. I had a name sake on the other side of the country that killed his and they picked my name by accident. They were very apologetic and restore it within an hour or so and even gave me a three month credit.

The honest approach to this is what Vonage SHOULD do and that is give their customers a CANCEL button on the web self-service page. This means that there isn't a chance for customer retention folks to do their job but letting you terminate your own service would be the best thing from a customer relationship standpoint.

3. CHARGES; PAYMENTS; TAXES; DISCONNECTION
3.1 Billing. When the service is activated, you must provide us with a valid email address and a credit or debit card number from a card issuer that we accept. We reserve the right to stop accepting credit or debit cards from one or more issuers. If your credit or debit card expires, you close your account, your billing address changes, or your credit or debit card is cancelled and replaced on account of loss or theft, you must advise us at once. We will bill all charges, applicable taxes and surcharges monthly in advance (except for usage-based charges, which will be billed monthly in arrears, and any other charges which we decide to bill in arrears) to your credit or debit card, including but not limited to :

activation fees; monthly Service fees; usage charges; international usage charges; advanced feature charges; premium services/Add-Ons, equipment purchases; regulatory recovery fee; Emergency 911 Cost Recovery; 911 fees; federal, state and/or local taxes; disconnection fees; and shipping and handling charges.

The amount of such fees and charges shall be published on our website and may change from time to time. Vonage may introduce new products and services at special introductory pricing. Introductory pricing may change at Vonage's discretion. Notification of monthly invoices will be sent to you via your email address on file with us. We reserve the right to bill at more frequent intervals if the amount you owe to us at any time exceeds $50. Vonage bills usage charges in full minute increments that are rounded up to the next full minute unless otherwise set forth in the rate schedules found on our website. Vonage bills fractional usage charges in full cents that are rounded up when the value is $.005 or more and down when the value is less than $.005, unless otherwise set forth in the rate schedules found on our website.

Suprised no one bother to post this. Cancelling your card per the TOS does not get you off the hook for paying Vonage. Sure, they may eventually drop you after making reasonable attempts to collect but that will look nasty on your credit report. If anyone is considering this, think about it before you pull the trigger. Your credit rating better be over 725 if you're gonna pull this stunt.

Forgot this as well. Damn legal contracts that people don't like to read:

Quote:
3.3 Payment and Collection.
(a) Payment. We only accept payment by credit or debit card. Your subscription to the Service authorizes us to charge your credit or debit card. This authorization will remain valid until 30 days after we receive written notice from you terminating our authority to charge your credit or debit card, whereupon we will charge your credit or debit card for the disconnection fee, if applicable, and any other outstanding charges and disconnect your Service. We may disconnect your Service at any time in our sole and absolute discretion if any charge to your credit or debit card is declined or reversed, your credit or debit card expires and you have not provided us with a valid replacement credit or debit card or in case of any other non-payment of account charges.
(b) Collection. If your Service is disconnected, you will remain fully liable to us for all charges pursuant to this Agreement and any and all costs we incur to collect such amounts, including, without limitation, collection costs and attorney's fees.
(c) Notices. You understand that it is difficult for Vonage to distinguish between credit and debit cards. You agree to waive your rights under Regulation E to receive ten days advance notice from Vonage regarding the amount that Vonage will debit from your account. Vonage may send you messages about your billing from time to time, but Vonage is not obligated to do so. Vonage may change or cease its messages at any time without notice to you.

Once again reread what I wrote. I never said I would not pay what I owed. But I'm not going to allow Vonage to charge more than their entilted to. Therefore I will cancel my card. And it is not a violation of terms of service if I cancel my service. At that point I no longer have a contract with Vonage. So all you goody goody types can take a deep breath and step down off of your high horse. I will still cancel my card and I advise anyone who cancels Vonage do so to protect their bank accounts.

Bob,

No on is one a high horse, we're just responding to this thread; remember, this is not your thread, it was started by jim28352 and he made a very specific (and very wrong) statement:

jim28352 wrote:
The easiest way to cancel Vonage would be to cancel your credit card and have them issue a new one. Just tell them you lost it and to refuse all future purchases.

That's it. That is his assertion in its entirety and under a thread he started and he titled "Easier way to cancel Vonage" And it is wrong.

No one in this thread has attacked your plan of cancelling the correct way (though at times that is not what you've said, cancelling your card first, which you have suggested, is not correct), but no where does jim28352 mention doing anything else, he says "The easiest way to cancel Vonage would be to cancel your credit card. . ." and that is not true.

2) You suggested the act way back here: http://www.vonage-forum.com/sutra82905.html#82905 , so do not get P off-ed at the replies.
