I have a Brother MFC-5100 hooked up to my Vonage line (not a second fax line, just the main one). Ever since I started using it, I have had nothing but problems. If a fax would start transmitting at all, it wouldn't get past page 3 or so. Pretty much the same problem(s) everyone else seems to be having.
I tried several different solutions, including dialing *99 before the call, putting a DSL filter in line after the MTA, fiddling with my bandwidth settings... all to no avail. I was nearly at my wits' end when I read that someone had had success by putting a DSL filter in line, but backwards. So I tried it. I have my setup as so:
MTA -> fax -> phone
And I changed it like so:
MTA -> filter (backwards) -> fax -> phone
AND IT FIXED MY PROBLEMS. Crazy cool. I've sent probably a hundred pages of faxes since I put in the filter, and I haven't had any problems at all. Regular phone conversations still sound fine too.
So I think that, for at least some people, putting in a backwards DSL filter may be the way to go. If anyone has questions, please post and I'll do my best to answer. |

The DSL filter I'm using is a Radio Shack ADSL filter, 2-wire. I plugged the male end into the line jack of the fax machine, and ran a phone cable from the MTA to the female end of the filter.
I'm also dialing *99 before each fax transmission, so that might factor in as well. I know that the *99 doesn't work by itself, though.
I don't think I can comment on credit card machines... are they different from fax machines? |

It's kinda funny, really... I started this thread yesterday and all of a sudden my fax machine stops working last night. ARRGH! So I tried restarting the fax machine, the MTA, rebooting my router and cable modem... nothing seemed to help. Then I looked at the cable connections between all the different components, and for some reason (I don't know why) I gave all of the phone jacks a slight tug, so that they were still held in by the clips, but not flush with the surface. And so help me, it started working again. I didn't realize it was so picky, but this tidbit might help you too. <shrug> |
