I also live in Northeast Iowa and have similar call quality issues. I have a friend who lives in British Columbia and she complains that the line is noisy and that I sound robotic sometimes. I also have mediacom cable. I don't really have any complaints about the sound on my end. I tried testing my service at Testyourvoip.com but the result didn't make sense. It said that incoming my call were about as bad as it gets and that outgoing my calls were fine which is the exact opposite of my real world experience. I'm starting to wonder if this is a problem with mediacoms service but you wouldn't think so since they have their own Voip service that they provide.

Figured I would post this here instead of making a new thread. First the relevant information:

1. Location: Oslo, Norway
2. ISP: DSL from Telenor Online.
3. Upload and download speeds - 6000/500 kbps
4. DSL modem: Topcom Xplorer 871BT
5. Vonage adapter: PAP2
6. LAN: DSL modem wired to Linksys WRT54G 4-port wireless router. PCs and Vonage adapter connected to this router. Cordless phone connected to Vonage adapter.
7. Issues: Two things:
- One-way audio. On incomming calls I can not hear the caller. Outbound calls work perfectly.
- A couple of times while testing a heavily accented voice was heard before it transfered to my phone here.
8. Run this Voip Test:

Also ran the testyourvoip.com and got excellent results. Feel free to be as technical as you want, I am not a network newbie but am at my wits' end with this issue. Driving me crazy. Started on Thursday July 13th, been working perfectly since October before this.

Any help, advice or hints would be greatly appreciated.

This is a puzzler. Neither of your Voip tests suggests any problem. If you haven't re-booted your system, you should try that.

If your cordless phone is a 2.4 GHz unit, that could explain all your troubles. If it is, try using a simple corded phone and see if that clears things up.

I have a fairly expensive 5.8ghz set of Uniden phones that I used to use. My girlfriend used to complain all the time about the noise though, so I don't use them anymore. I've also just switch to a different corded phone and that seems to have help. The other corded phone I was using was pretty old. I believe noise is still a problem on her end, although I don't think it is constant, and she says I occasionally will break up in a robotic-like sound.

Tested it with a regular corded phone and it gives me the same issue. The cordless has also worked since November...

I am seriously starting to believe this is all on Vonage's side to be honest.

Small update: Starting to wonder if some software I am running is interfering with incomming calls. And it seems to be my company's phone software which I am running the client of. Anyone ever experienced anything similar before?

If you're using most of your upstream bandwidth, then yes, call audio will be degraded. Because of the geographical distance between Norway & the USA, your Vonage connection might have less of a tolerance because of the delays and limited bandwidth of international routers & backbones used. There could also be a port interaction as well.

Not bandwith related whatsoever. And it just happened to me again with the phone software closed.

I recently went out and bought 5.8 Ghz cordless phones and was having the same issue as with the 2.4 Ghz phones. I am thinking that It may be part of a firewall issue so I activated port forwarding on my router and it seemed to help a little bit with the dropped packets, as it does not happen as frequently. Go to www.portforward.com and find/click on your specific router in order to learn how to set the port forwarding for your specific router. Like I said, it did NOT completely solve the issue but it's a start. Also, make sure you turn off any file-sharing programs as they tend to eat up bandwidth. I am thinking of switching out my Toshiba PCX2200 Cable Modem for a Motorola SB5120.

Before you do, please run another Voip test. Do this one with a test call to Boston at www.testyourvoip.com . I'm really curious to see what's happening here.
