PostPosted: Sat Jun 10, 2006 8:52 pm    Post subject: I cant believe the WRTP54G does not have voice QOS Reply with quote Back to top

I went out and got one of these from best buy today. Free after a mess of rebates. I want to use a single device instead of a phone router and wireless router. The QOS tab has no voice QOS option like my old linksys did. I tried to call support - got some chick in india who didn't seem to know what QOS was. have been working over e-mail support. They magically upgraded me to 1.00.64 somehow. That didn't help any - then told me do not use the internet while placing a call. Am I missing something??? Is there no way to prioritize voice traffic on this router? I cant believe they are shipping this POS to their customers if you cant use the net while talking. I was able to do mass uploading and talk on the phone with no problems with the older model linksys. You would think the router features would get better as the newer models are released. Am I missing something before I take this thing back??

Any help would be appreciated.

The QoS on the WRTP54G is rather limited. Depending on how much upload capacity you have, your calls may be affected while downloading or uploading files. As far as surfing the net while on a call, that should not be a problem.

Are you famailar with the Hawking HBB1...it is a network optimizer that prioritizes voice traffic and is ideal for Voip. I use the Hawking HBB1 for QoS and it works great sitting between my cable modem and the WRTP54G. I notice no ill effects while surfing, or uploading and downloading while on the phone.

I have enough gear in the house to make this work. My goal was to reduce my wireless/ routing gear to one device. I was blown away that this didn't have a similar QOS capability as the RTP31 or WRT54g , which I both own. They will both do voice qos just fine. I really need to be able to send large attachments and screen sharing applications since I work from home. I guess it is back to best buy tommorow.

I wonder if this would work on that router? It is not listed as a supported device so maybe take that back and get one fo the supported ones.

Good thought, but you're not going to be able to put DD-WRT on a Vonage WRT54G.

Too bad it doesn't suppport the WRTP54G, that would pretty much rock.

I got this router with my new service direct from Vonage. I assumed it gave priority to phone calls, but the calls are choppy if I so much as click on a news link from Yahoo. If I'm downloading something, I can't make a call at all.

Should I return this thing and get something else? I liked the idea of a unified box with wireless router.

Is your router from Vonage behind another device like a wireless router or is it between your cable/dsl modem and your other device?

The DSL modem goes into a Lynksys router (BEFSR41). I plugged my WRTP54G into one of that router's ports. Another one of those ports feeds another router, into which our four computers are plugged.

So, my phone goes into the new WRTP54G, which goes into the BEFSR41, as does all of our other internet traffic via another router (which brand I cannot identify -- it's old).

I would take your WRTP54G and plug that directly into the dsl modem then go from there to your BEFSR41. If your BEFSR41 is touching the data first that is just adding more latency and could result in the poor quaility of service.

I have a Sonicwall Wireless router and when i had it setup like yours i got very poor quaility with phone calls but I did what i mentioned above and now the quaility is perfect.

DSL Modem --> WRTP54G ---> BEFSR41 ---> other devices
