I have been having a problem with large delay on local calls lately. Not all calls, just some. seems pretty random. Sometimes calling the same number it is bad and after hanging up and calling again it's ok. Incoming don't seem to have problems. It's just outgoing but that could just be a coincidence. I don't know about long distance calls because I don't make that many. You would think that local calls should not have a problem since they don't travel very far over the internet. It's like talking over a walkie talkie. Each side pretty much has to say "over" after they finish their sentence. Almost unusable!

The Voip test on this site shows a decent QoS of 65% with plenty of upload and download bandwidth. Enough for 6 high quality Voip calls according to the test. Jitter and Pings are low.

I don't know what to do.

The latest info I am getting from Vonage is that my jitter is sometimes high. Apperently there is a jitter buffer that is compensating for that which produces clean call quality at the expense of delay. Am working with Vonage advanced tech support to see if we can do something about it.

The good news is that my new Dlink Vta adapter is working well. Vonage sent it out to me to swap with my Linksys PAP2. Maybe it's a new setting on this new adapter that Vonage needs to tweak.

Ok, so the Vonage guy in NJ called from Vonage to my regular home landline and it had the same problem with a large delay as calling from my Vonage to my regular home landline.

Calling from the home landline to the same Vonage number in NJ and to my Vonage number did not have any delay problems.

Therefore it has nothing to do with my setup. It must be a problem with the PSTN gateway in my local exchange. Because it is only on Vonage to PSTN and not PSTN to Vonage calls it probably is not the internet connection to that gateway either. It's gotta be the gateway itself.

The Advanced Tech support guy in NJ did what he explained was a high level trouble ticket that goes up another level still to (I am assuming) the guys who manage the PSTN gateways etc. I had to provide at least 3 local phone numbers that I was having this problem with. Apparently that is what is required for this type of trouble ticket.

Interestingly enough, the next day (yesterday) my local calls were all perfect and clear with no delay. Not sure if that was a coincidence or if they actually did something. I believe I was supposed to get email updates as the trouble ticket is acted upon but have not received anything yet. Hopefully they found the problem and fixed it. I am cautiously optimistic.

I have a PAP2 with a nearly picture-perfect Internet connection (upload and download), but suffer from echo being heard by the OTHER side of the call. Should I be looking into replacing the adapter? I'm interested in hearing more about the jitter tweak which can affect echo...

I asked the Advanced Tech support guy and he said the newer ATA's are automatic so there is not much they can adjust. I am assuming that includes the Linksys and Dlink ATA's

I would imagine they can do things on the PSTN gateway which I would think has a fairly sophisticated jitter buffer. That may have been related to my problem. Calls are still pretty good so I am happy. Will have to see if it lasts.
