PostPosted: Fri Jun 09, 2006 4:52 pm    Post subject: RT31P2 All Ethernet LEDs Steady On; Router is Inop Reply with quote Back to top

I was hit by lightning last week and the cable company replaced the modem which got me back online. When I reconnect the router/phone adapter I can no longer get online. Yes, I'm doing it in the proper sequence and have tried it several times but no dice.
All three Ethernet LEDs come on and remain steady on, regardless if an ethernet cable is plugged into the ports or not.

Any suggestions before I spend an hour on the phone w/tech support just so they can send me a new router?

Thanks!

Here's the requested info to go along w/a tech question:

2. EarthLink via BrightHouse cable

You have tried a hard reset on the RT31P2 haven't you?

If the RT31P2 is out of warrantee, you might want to skip the phone call and just replace it locally. Otherwise, I don't see that there's anything left for you to do except place that call.

I am starting to get annoyed with my RT31P2. Living in Florida the power goes out all the time for just a few seconds every few days. Every time that happens you need to unplug the RT31P2 and plug it back in. This is getting to be a pain in the butt.

Yes, living in FL can be a pain w/the need to sometimes reset the router. I haven't had to do it very often though.

Steve48, could you define "hard reset"? I've left both the modem and router unplugged for around 1/2 hour before attempting to reconnect them. I don't think it's a procedural issue but do appreciate any suggestions you have.

ODD?? I also have the RT31P2. Lots of lightning strikes here in Central Oregon. I often have to re-boot my modem after a close one. I have never had to re-boot the RT31P2 in 17 months. I wonder why the difference?

There's a reset button on the back of the RT31P2. Power the unit up, then push and hold the reset button for about 5 seconds. See if that gets it working again.

solution - 1 ups a very small one can handle it nicely + your modem and any other routers. my network stay quite stable since i have it all on the ups.

plus it give me the advantage of if the power drops i still can use the phone.

if the router lights up like a christmas tree, chances are its good and cooked, especially if the cable modem was cooked. Most likely, overvoltage could have fed through the ethernet into the wan port and smoked the switching end of the router
