OK, so I first signed up with Vonage in March of this year and everything was fine. Then my Dad signed up with Sunrocket and was saving money on their $199/year plan so, yes, I switched. In the meantime I asked my number be ported to Sunrocket (Global Crossings) from Vonage (Focal). I was only with Sunrocket a couple of days and realized I had made a big mistake and went back to Vonage. My number still worked with Vonage so I was happy. Little did I know, Sunrocket di not cancel the LNP transfer I had submitted so on May 17 my number went dead and I found out it had bee ported to Sunrocket even though I did not have an active account! Now Vonage has been trying to get it back and not having much success. I think this number porting stuff is really messed up. It takes too long and newbies like myself don't understand all the rules and laws that are involved. Do I have any hope of ever getting my number back from a dead Sunrocket account? |

According to the technology, rules, laws, and codes covering Local Number Portability, you have about as much of a chance of getting your number back as George W. Bush has of being voted in for a third term.
If the phone providers actually cared about your number, there is enough grey area to get the job done. All of the companies providing telephone service would rather own the numbers rather than the customers and compliance to LNP is not on the top of their things to do. Some providers go a step further and intentionally gum up the process.
There is no guaranty but your best chance is to involve the top dog in charge of each provider involved and then stay on them like flies on a pile of fresh dung. |

That's a pretty inflammatory comment to make. Do you have proof of this or is it just your opinion that this happens? |

I belive they do gum up the works on purpose.
Let's look at this idea. Vonage will not release my number because the customer information does not match their records even though I copied the information from the LOA I sent them when I transferred from Comcast.
Now they say my new phone company has to contact Vonages 3rd party Broadwing for the portout. Broadwing refuses to portout because of incorrect information.
Neither Vonage or Broadwing will talk to me and tell me what information is connected to my number considering they either fat fingered it on entry or changed the information themselves.
So I cannot submit a proper request to my new company because the information is unknown and no one will give it out transfer is no longer possible.
Complaints are now filed with the FCC, BBB, and the consumers affair division. I will also file with the State Attorney Generals office.
I will not have this pathetic excuse for a company screw me.
UPDATE AUG 10TH
Vonage has finally released my number to SunRocket. Now comes the fun of trying to cancel my Vonage account.
The horror continues http://www.phazerelectronix.com/voipblog.html |
