Ever since I hooked up my Vonage service my Internet connection keeps failing. It NEVER did this before I hooked it up. NEVER.

I experimented with it for a while and thought it might be my screensaver (standard Windows XP screensaver) because everytime I would come back from screensaver mode, the Internet wouldn't come up. I knew it wasn't my service because the modem didn't indicate any faults. So I shut off the screensaver and it seemed like it did the trick for a few days. But that wasn't it either. I called customer support and they told me to plug my VTech IP8100-2's power directly into the wall and don't use a surge protector. What!? That didn't make sense but i did it anyway. The Net still goes down whenever it feels like it. It's very frustrating and I can't trust the customer support in India.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm hoping this message will be able to be sent out before it goes down again. Wish me luck.

If you can afford to be without your phone for awhile, I'd start by verifying that taking the IP8100 out of service restores flawless internet performance. After thats done, I'd call customer service again and demand that they replace the IP if they can't come up with a solution. I think 888 250 1799 gets you directly to tier 2.

By the way, do you lose phone service when this happens?

One solution might be to get a router and put the IP behind it, with your computers also running right off the router. But you shouldn't have to do it that way, of course.

Are you running any bandwidth intensive programs like bittorent? Adapter/routers aren't renowned for their quality as routers. It could be getting overloaded if that's the situation.

I don't lose phone service when this happens. It's only the Net.

I'm thinking about checking my firewall settings to see if it is somehow blocking access due to inactivity. But sometimes it'll shut down even if we're on the Net.

I also have a Linksys router Vonage sent me. I haven't tried that yet.

Thanx for the info.

Oh, and no I'm not running any high bandwidth usage programs. We mainly use our PC for our kids photos and the Net.

Please keep us posted. What kind of router did Vonage send, and why did they send it?

Not sure why they sent it. I bought the VTech phones and they still sent me the router for free. The router is a Linksys WRTP54G.

If I can find the tme this weekend I'll try it out and let you know how it works. I'm sure I'll have to give it a couple days to make sure everything is working properly and then I can report back.

Weird. I'll be very curious to see whether the phone function on that unit works.
