I have my VT1000 TA between my Linksys Cable Modem and my Linksys wireless router (WRT54G) and am using Comcast in the Tucson AZ area. Twice in the past two days, the TA stops passing ALL traffic until it is rebooted. In each case, I was on a Skype call from my PC (cabled not on wireless). Not only did the Skype call stop, but all other network traffic stopped as well. I have checked my network connection (MOS of 4.3 using Brix).
I talked to Vonage tech support and after explaining my configuration at least 5 times, the tech said my problem was due to the TA automatically trying to upgrade it's firmare which I thought was implausible. He said he would change my packet size and packetization rate which I also thought was not likely to help and sure enough it didn't.
Any ideas on this or how I can get a new TA? Thanks Jim |

your network config is less than optimal. though it may not help your issue, you should have modem - wrt54g - mta, then setup qos with the wrt for the mta to have priority. |

It probably is not clear from my description but my TA is between my modem and my router so router MTA and QoS settings on the router would have no effect on Voip traffic from the TA. In any case, my MOS score is 4.3 which is just about perfect (perfect is 4.4) for G.729 codecs with is what I assume Vonage uses. |

I had the same problems almost 3 years ago with my VT1005. At the time there was a belief that the adapter was hanging during port scans. There were also some security issues. I moved it inside my router and all my problems disappeared. |

yeah, your mta is between your modem and router, which is less than optimal, especially with the mta. oh well, maybe now that someone else said the same thing you'll try it... fwiw, mos is irrelevant, as the default is codec is g711. |

John So why does MTA matter when the Voip traffic does not go through the router? The TA should uses small packets anyway which should not be affected by MTA anyway. I am curious about what is the "optimal" MTA and how can you tell what MTA I'm using? Also, MOS is relevant since it is a measure of perceived call quality. I was an engineer with Nortel for several years and it certainly was important with their enterprise systems.
Thanks Jim |

I can tell what mta you're using because it's in big bold letters in the subject of your post. the point here is that the mta is a poor router, designed for the average end user with a modem and one computer, preferably lightly used, so why would you put it in between your internet connection and good router? let your good router handle everything. anyway, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone recommending your setup with the possible exception of Vonage themselves so they can eliminate other user issues with routers. mos has nothing to do with your problem or where you put your mta. you can have a dialup connection and no Voip service at all and still have an mos score. it's irrelevant to this entire thread, your setup, and your issue. |

DUH - Kept thinking of MTU not MTA which I assume means Motorolla TA - my bad. Anyway, I got 6 Mbps this morning doing an FTP download so the TA sure ain't slowing down "normal" traffic. I believe the TA is defective plain and simple. I tend to believe that this arrangement is better in principal (maybe not in practice) because the TA can put Voip traffic "ahead" of data traffic and throttle large packets so the voice traffic doesn't have as much delay jitter.
In any case, it works fine except when it hangs and need rebooting so changing the location isn't going to make it die any less often. |

Isolating it from the Internet by putting it behind another router made it more reliable for me. So I disagree with your statement. |
