In the U.S.A Vonage customers pay only 24.99 American dollars for the unlimited service.
We have to pay here 39.99 Canadian dollars for "almost" the same service.
With the current exchange rate (give or take) we pay the equivalent of 36 American dollars. (And no free calls to some destinations in Europe!)
So we pay 11 American dollars more for less service! There MUST be a reason! Does anybody know why?

Just out of curiosity, what is the competition like for Voip services in Canada++. Are the ISPs offering competing services?

As far as I can tell there is a real lack of competition from the incumbent players in Canada. Vonage has been forced to lower prices in the US to be competitive, in fact it is apparent that most people are losing money selling Voip in the US*. That is my guess why you are paying more.

*Based upon Vonage being number 1 and cable companies selling phone service at a loss to undercut competition from Verizon FIOS.

++Telus was supposed to roll out residential Voip at the end of 2005. As of May it was still not available.
Bell Canada charges CDN $40.

I guess you must be right. The poor competition could be the generator of the difference in price.
Also you are correct about Bell Canada charging 40 dollars a month for the service, but that is for a Voip phone that doesn't need a personal internet connection (all the equipment is centralized in their offices)
There are other companies that offer Voip services, at a cheeper rates, but why try something different when one is content with the service one already have.
When Vonage started in Canada the pricing was exactly the same for both countries.

almost everything costs more in Canada.. why should this be different?

****, but oh well.. I just use the 500 min plan anyways, it's more than enough since incomming is free, wifes mom just calls her back on our Columbia Virtual Number and they can talk for an hour or whatever..

I'm not happy about the price discrepency. But, I guess I understand why they do it. Of course, the US side of things was $10 higher a couple years ago, and I strongly believe, the price was lowered due to more variety in the market place.

It's still an indicitive of the pricing discrepency when a US unlimited with a Canadian virtual number on an account is cheaper than a lone Canada unlimited account.

Sad Thems the breaks I suppose

also a couple years ago, when Vonage canada started, the exhange rate was also higher, therefore causing the gap b/t the prices, now with our $ getting higher, the gap seems so much bigger..

This is fustrating. I hoped they would be cheaper. There is no reason for me to go with a service that costs more. I'm moving in a month or so to Burlington, have a phone number in Toronto and St Catharines. I'm starting to think the Skype service might be worth the 40 bucks for the year and just deal with it that way. I did like the idea of having my messages emailed to me, but 40 dollars... every month? I don't know... Does anybody know of any place for 'reviews' on the service of Vontage, Skype or Bell?

I want to research the service, and issues before I actually dive into this 'VOIP'. I mean, I use MSN to voice chat now.. it's been fine, but having a proper phone service would be idea.

In this forum we are not supposed to talk about other Voip provders in a comparison view..

you may want to try www.howardforums.com or www.dslreports.com there are ppl in those forums discussing other services and comparing..

as for $40/mo, it doesn't have to be 40, it could be $20/mo if you sign up for the basic plan, that gives you FREE incomming calls, and 500 outgoing, 500 mins for outgoing is quite a lot, plus you can use up to around 800 mins and pay the extra per min rate and still be less than $40 for a total before taxes...

this is wayy cheaper than a regular landline, and I'll tell you it's cheaper than the main carriers Voip rates as well.. plus you get all the feature, and aren't limited to just 5 or 10 or whatever.. and remember with Vonage you get to use your regular phone and even your house wiring if you want, unlike a service you mentioned above.. Smile

You can use "the service mentioned above" with your home wiring as well. You might want to check out the companie's website to see if there's a solution for you.
