Post subject: Linksys WRTP54G - phone line works but not internet
I just got a brand new WRTP54G, and set it all up.
Checked the router admin page, it has an IP address, the voice is provisioned and ready to go. The firmware is also up to date (1.00.64)
The problem is that no computer connected to the WRTP54G can access the internet. Pings/http requests completely time out. Whats funny is that the phone connected to the router is working perfectly. What even funnier is that if I go to Administration/Diagnostics on the router, and click on Ping, I can resolve/ping external websites from the router itself!
So here's whats happening:
1. Router has a valid IP address/dns server etc.
2. Router has provisioned the phone service correctly, and it works well.
3. Router itself can ping external websites (google.com, yahoo.com, root name servers etc)
4. Each computer connected to the router has a valid IP addres. I can hit the router admin page from each computer, so I know the IP is ok.
5. The computers connected to the router can ping each other.
6. Computers connected to the router can resolve DNS names to IP addresses.
7. No computer connected to the router (wireless or wired) can connect to the internet (ping/http/ftp/telnet etc etc).
Any ideas? I've been through the usual tech support rigmarole (reboot modem/router/pc multiple times, patch router to 1.00.64 firmware etc). Finally they suggested I RMA the router. I'm just going to return it to the radio shack I bought it from instead (I need the device for a trip I'm taking sunday).
Thanks for your help,

I know you can resolve dns, but can you hit the website from the ip? (i.e.
http://64.233.167.99
)
how was your setup before the wrtp54g? did you set up any proxy servers in your browser? I would download a new browser (firefox, opera, whatever you don't have) and see what happens with it.

No, I cant hit any website using the IP. The router seems to be dropping ALL outgoing packets from the lan side to the wan side.
I suspect the only reason DNS resolution is working is because the router itself is acting as the DNS proxy (I noticed that the name server on each computer is set to the router's LAN IP address).
Before the WRTP54G, I had a Netgear router hooked up to my cable modem. It works fine. I'm on it right now.
No proxy servers in the browsers. I know they're ok, they can access the internet when the netgear is plugged into the cable modem. Nothing when the linksys is plugged in to the cable modem.

most comcast locations make you register your cable modem mac address, but I'm not sure if they would be going deeper than that. at any rate, try cloning the mac of your netgear in the linksys and see if that does the trick.

I doubt the mac address is the issue, since the linksys router is succesfully getting a comcast IP on its wan port. The
Voip
phone service is also working (demonstrating that the router can indeed talk to the
Vonage
server), and I can also ping outside hosts from the router diagnostics page. This implies the internet connectivity from the router -> outside world is ok. Is it possible just the Lan->Wan NAT hardware is faulty?
Is there some hidden setting on the router to block internet access from the router? Maybe on the mysterious "Voice" tab in router-admin which says "Contact your
Vonage
service provider for more information" ?

yeah you're right, I have no idea, although I still suspect it has something to do with your browser/old router. it takes 2 minutes to download opera, so give it a shot if you want, or wait around for someone else that has an idea.
the voice tab has lots of neat settings that are handy to access if you have a provider that lets you, but none of them have anything to do with the connection. they pertain to technical
Voip
things like volume, ring cadence, etc etc etc.

My guess:
1. cables
2. Wireless settings. Mine work with G only
3. Is your computer reconizing the local area connection network?
4. firewall programs

Thanks for the suggestions.
I returned the linksys to the local ratshack and got another one. This one worked flawlessly out of the box - auto updated itself to 1.00.62, and both phone and internet just work.
Insane that I wasted 4 hours of my life last night on faulty hardware.
