PostPosted: Fri Jun 02, 2006 1:28 am    Post subject: QoS not working, IDSL, RT32P2. Reply with quote Back to top

My QoS is basically nonexistant. IDSL is the only 'broad'band we can get out here.

Configuration:

IDSL modem/TA -> Linksys RT32P2 (Firmware 1.30.01 ) performing NAT. -> Linksys WRT54GC (Firmware v1.02.Cool household router (also performing NAT for now, might change to pure switch. Should not matter as it is downstream of the ATA.).

Since the RT32P2 is right after the modem, I would have thought it's QoS would be working even on my rather slow 144kbit connection. No such luck, as soon as I so much as reload a web page or check e-mail, stuttering voice.

I have tried 90kbit, 50kbit, and now 30kbit Bandwidth Saver options (power cycling the RT32P2 each time) to no avail.

I would like REAL QoS, and need to preserve as much bandwidth as possible of the 144kbit for other use when the phones are not in use.

Any advice greatly appeciated.

I did some more reading, looks like I can't really change my RT32P2's QoS, so I need a good upstream, probally ethernet-port based QoS device.

Should I just get a WRT54GL and put aftermarket firmware on it, or is there something better (yet $ less than a Cisco 7200 series? Smile

are you actually setting up qos or are you using the bandwidth saver only? qos is in the firmware pages at http://192.168.15.1
if you search for qos you will find a lot of information, including pros and cons of different routers/firmware and devices like the hawking HBB1 and the linksys OGV200.

I think you can get QOS to work for voice on the RT32P2, but in my experience, it is such a poor router that it is probably not worth the effort. It seems to work much better behind another router.

I am using a LinkSys WRT54GS with the stock v4.70.6 firmware. It has both port-based and MAC-based QOS and I have been using the port-based QOS with good results.

Yes, I forgot to mention that the RT32P2's OoS for Voice is "on" and I have tried the following settings: (512k, 256k, 128k, 64k, 32k) all to no avail. Dosen't seem like it's really on (or it is as if it is expecting a typical cable connection around 3mbit/384kbit and not my 144k/144k Smile

Sounds like a WRT54Gx is the way to go, I will pick one up and try the stock firmware first.

Well, I grabed a WRT54GS(v 4) today, and no improvement with the stock firmware.

Tried v4.71.1, Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c also, and STILL no improvement!

QoS is ethernet-port based, with port1 going to the RT32P2 (set 'highest' priority and all other ports going to ethernet switch (priority "low".) Wireless is disabled since it does not support port based QoS.

well, I don't know if it will help but you should be doing by mac address. put the mac of the rt31p2 as highest priority and don't worry about the other stuff. mac address is technically the best way to do it.

I have used both port and MAC QOS with my WRT54GS v.2, and both worked just fine with the RT31P2 as a phone adapter.

Granted, I have quite a bit more bandwidth to play with, but a Vonage call should requite no more than 90 kbps...that should leave you about 54 kbps, less overhead...maybe about 39 kbps left over.

Something that I thought of...I don't really fully understand how IDSL works, but I seem to rememeber that is is somewhat similar to ISDN. Recalling my ISDN days, it seems that there were two 64 kbps channels. The router ISDN modem would start with a 64 kbps connection, then bond a second channel on demand, for a total of 128k.

It worked with a Windows feature which I seem to recall was called multiple channel bonding. Again, I don't know much about IDSL, but I am wondering if your bandwidth issues could be related to this "bonding" technique.

Perhaps the bonding works for TCIP, but not for UDP traffic...(?)
