I was researching
Vonage
several months ago, but for various reasons decided against it at that time.
One issue was that TestYourVoIP results were borderline - 3.1 MOS score, with packet discards being the main problem.
I see that a new test is available, and my MOS scores are 3.9 or 4.0 with slightly high jitter (around 9.7 ms) measured sometimes, but not all the times.
I don't see any information about "packet discards" in the new test, which was flagged as a problem in the old one.
Two questions:
1.
Could somebody clarify this for me, and help me determine which is going to be a more reliable predictor of sound quality should I go with
Voip
?
2.
Is there anything here specific to
Vonage
, or would these results apply to any other
Voip
service?
Thanks.

It is hard to comment on another test without knowing the product at the code level however the
Vonage
Forum test is configured to match the
Vonage
packet/rate specifications, discards should be reported however. If you can let me know your test id number (reported on the speed page) I will review the detail TCP audit report produced for every test and get back to you. This won't be until tomorrow as I am travelling to London this evening.

I'll need to post tomorrow, as it won't let me do another test today, saying I had reached my maximum.

Julianp, the test does specify discards, but it doesn't specify in which direction. Loss on the other hand is specified separately for each direction. How should we interpret the discard result?
DLCphoto, I for one would be interested in a comparison test between the forum test and testyourvoip, taken as close together as possible. It's possible that your service has improved and that the two tests will now agree. My own results are comparable (now that I've installed the latest Java).

I didn't make this clear in my original post, but I did go back to the TestYourVoIP site today, to retest and see if anything had changed. It was the same as several months ago, with a 3.1 to 3.4 MOS score, attributable mostly to packet discards (3.2%). These are on the outgoing path from my computer (to Boston). I get a 4.4 on the path from Boston to me.

OK - the
Vonage
Test let me repeat it. Results are a bit different from earlier today. Here is what I just found now (a few minutes after repeating the TestYourVoIP test at 3.4).
Test Result # 5031
4.9ms Average Jitter
0.0% Packet Loss
0.0% Packet Discards (I now see where that is presented)
Download 2,104,264 bps (was around 4.5 mbps earlier, which is where I usually run)
Upload 445,024 bps
QOS 59% (was around 97% earlier)
RTT 72 ms
MaxPause 111 ms
MOS Score 4.0
The two tests definitely differ with respect to Packet Discards on my system, with my connection. TestYourVoIP consistently gives me 3 to 7% on the outgoing side, while the VonageForum Test doesn't detect any, apparently.
I just did another repeat test (#5034). More representative download speed and QOS (4.7 mbps and 99%). Still 0.0% Packet Discards. Details here:

Appreciate any clarification here, when you have time to look.
Many thanks.

Post subject: Speedtest unable to test VoIP, suggestions?
I am a new member to the forums, and a consistently frustrated
Vonage
customer due to nearly constant choppy connections both ways. I am trying to fix it rather than pay the disconnect fee and leave, but for some reason the speedtest cannot test my
Voip
. I have PingPlotter running as we speak, but I'm stuck on the Speedtest. I get an error stating "Error: Cannot perform voice-over-IP simulation" Any ideas on why this might not be working on my system? Let me know what info you need from me, other than:
