Great idea, except....

It used to be easy to cancel. CAll the 866 #, press the option to cancel (I think it was option 3), wait on hold for about 5-10 minutes, get a "customer retention specialist" who was better at solving problems than the usual rep, tell them you want to cancel, have phone line go dead a few minutes after call, done.

I think the part about the "customer retention specialist" is what killed this idea. Since everyone and their brother started calling the cancelation department to get their problems resolved, it probably became the busiest department in the company. Wink

So, we could have a sticky, but I bet the information in it would change. Frequently.

Not at all.

If you have made good faith efforts to resolve a billing dispute with a vendor, including (preferably) sending one registered letter to their business address, then you are fully within your rights to reverse the charge.

If that should happen, you simply call your credit card company and obtain the proper procedure for reversing a charge, which is generally a form you fill out, including some documentation of your efforts to resolve the dispute, and your credit card company will mark the transaction as "in dispute".

Credit card companies tend to side with their customers (cardholders), so the payee has to act to keep their money. If the dispute goes unresolved, the money is credited back to your credit card and debited from the vendor's account.

I hope it never comes to that, for anyone, because the process is fraught with accusation on both sides, but sometimes just threatening to do it helps.

Vonage is also a member of the Better Business Bureau. I suspect filling out a complaint with the BBB would get a resolution fairly quickly. Here's my experience today, after browsing this board over the weekend.

I bought equipment Friday, signed up with V. Saturday and by Sunday knew I would have to cancel, even though I was pretty satisfied. V. failed the spousal unit test, and despite my suggestions (read: pleading) over the weekend, I knew it was a non-starter.

After navigating the phone tree, I got a 'your wait may be at least 25 minutes' message.

Which, ultimately, was something in excess of 50 minutes.

That's the bad.

The good is - I ended up with a rep in New Jersey (read: I could understand him) who was pleasant, funny and professional.

I walked away thinking the wait time ****, but the company does some things very right.

so i just switched over to sunrocket today and its fine, as good as Vonage.

I cancelled Vonage but they charged the whole 39.99 cancellation fee, because ive had it for about 6 months. I was wondering if there is anyway i can get that amount refunded.

fyi i bought the Vonage equipment from circuit city, and i was most definitly on hold for 40 min, and spoke to a very tired sounding agent.

Nope, probably not. The fee is assessed if you cancel after the 30 day (3 week, really) money back guarantee period and within the first year of service.

Wrong! They recently changed their 30 day money back guarantee to a 14 day money back guarantee. Given that you need to give them 10 days notice, the reality is they give you effectively no money back guarantee period. This is a very poor business practise.

As for the $39.99 cancellation fee, it is unfortunate, but Vonage is doing essentially what the competition is doing. Some claim this negates their claim of no annual contract -- the effectively are charging you a minimum of $3.00 per month - assuming you cancel immediately.

Interesting. I didn't realize they had narrowed the trial period down to basically nothing. Thanks for the heads-up.

Cheesh, I go away for a few weeks and the whole place goes to hell. Oh, wait, short walk. (grin).

Seriously, that'll cut into recommendations a bit, but on the other hand I'm sold on the service itself, which has been just about 100% rock solid for me for almost a year now, and I've never actually referred anyone and been paid for it (largely because the few people I have referred got impatient and bought their adapters retail - ah, well).
