I have a UTStarcom F1000 WiFi phone purchased from Vonage which no longer has service.

Since the phone is not transferable to another Vonage user (see other post) the admin password is needed to use the phone I purchased on another carrier.

The phone is locked to the Vonage service, and Vonage will not activate it if you give it or sell to someone.

just like a cellphone that is locked to a particular carrier your phone is locked to Vonage there is no way around it without the password and Vonage won't give out passwords.

maybe oneday you will be able to find on the web an unlock program like they have for cell phones but it's not going to be anytime soon.

There is at least one poster at the UTStarcom WiFI phone user forum that says that Vonage customer service gave him the admin password after going to the customer service supervisor and explaining that Vonage had charged him for the phone so they should give it to him. I cannot confirm that, but it does seem logical to me.

Each Vonage locked WiFi phone has a unique admin password (random characters), so "the password" won't show up posted somewhere.

A phone call to Vonage came back with the comments that the admin menu link is for their use only. But a search on the web came up with this:

Unfortunately it would appear my handset does not have the "ATE menu" available, so Vonage have clearly worked at locking this option off as well.

I am also a user who does not appreciate paying for devices which are then crippled by the vendors. There time might be better spent improving the service so users do not need to go to another service provider than trying to lock users in.

I assume you are alluding to the practice some Mobile Phone companies still have of SIM locking handsets.

Iin the face of curent positive experience, no I don’t have a problem with Mobile Phones. Mobile phone companies here in the UK (at least the largest, Vodaphone) are waking up to the credible value of NOT locking phones. The last 2 top of the range handsets I have been supplied with have been SIM open. This has certainly foster goodwill and colleagues have been encouraged to renew their contracts with Vodaphone at the expense of their former mobile phone vendors.

I am disappointed that the staff of a frontier breaking company like Vonage are so culturally orientated in their thinking to underwrite an undesirable business practice so flippantly.

Is there not untapped value in harnessing the recreational interest many users have to explore the full capacity of their IT assets in addition to focusing solely on the utilitarian aspect of the service? Trust the customer and foster confidence in the supplied service, as has been shown in many parallel industries the reciprocal customer goodwill value can be great.

With Vonages current share price woes and financial squeeze, such visionary attitudes can be the nitro in the engine of success for cutting a edge organisation.

The unlocked phone comcept is popular in much of the world - but not in the USA. In the USA, most (all??) cell phones still come locked to the mobile operator. I believe that Vonage is operating under that philosophy.
