Post subject: FYI: Wanted to give my phone to my son but
I discontinued my service and found out that
Vonage
will not activate a phone purchased from them for another user - even though it is to remain on their service.
I you discontinue your service don't expect to be able to sell or give your hardware to anyone to use. Pretty much makes your hardware investment worth almost nothing when you discontinue your service with them.
I paid full price for my UTStarcom F1000 and now the official "corporate policy" does not allow me to give it to my son. He was the person who refered me to
Vonage
in the first place and is still a client.

According to
their website
they will reactivate it for you on a new account. Maybe you could open the service in your name, but let your son pay.

I had a previous account with
Vonage
and would like to get it back. I still have my Phone Adapter I’d like to use.
Unfortunately
Vonage
cannot re-activate disconnected or closed accounts. You will need to sign up for a new account and contact Customer Care at 1-VONAGE-HELP (1-866-243-4357) to use your old Phone Adapter on your new account.

I believe that they will activate an existing phone on a new account if the original owner and the new owner both request it. They won't do it for just a "new" owner as a policy as they consider a phone that is not associated with its original owner of record to be "lost or stolen" as far as I can tell.
