PostPosted: Thu Jun 01, 2006 10:13 am    Post subject: New Setup Advice Requested - Router to Purchase Reply with quote Back to top

Hi

We are a small business that currently has Vonage to run 8 phone lines and 2 faxes via a DSL connection.

We are moving to a new location where our internet will be supplied via a wireless link with 5MB up and down. I was just wanting to run my proposed setup by people to make sure there wasn't anything I'm missing.

Our Vonage system consists off a LinkSys RT31P2 with 4 LinkSys RTP300 and 1 LinkSys PAP2 jumpered off that. Our current Internet connection is Cable connected to a NetGear WGR614.

What I'm thinking of doing is purchasing a new router (Linksys WRT54GL?) and placing that at the front. I would connect the initial Vonage router (LinkSys RT31P2) and the NetGear wireless router to that. I can then make use of the QOS on the new router to help with the phones and faxes.

Does anyone see any problems with that. i.e. is that the best way to connect everything? Are there any other recommendations besides the WT54GL? (I've seen good reviews and posts on it?)

Thanks
Peter

If you buy the WRT54GL, you can ditch the Netgear wireless. I have a WRT54GL at home (not my primary router though) and I like it. If you load a third party firmware, like DD-WRT, you'll get advanced QoS capabilities.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look into the 3rd party firmware.

I looked at http://www.dd-wrt.com, but there is a LOT to read there!

I noticed that there appear to be micro, mini, standard, Voip and vpn versions. Could you possibly point me at the best download for My WRT54GS V.2 ? Is there anything tragic or important that I should know before attempting the upgrade?

They give step-by-step instructions on how to flash your router properly. Follow them to the tee, or you may brick your router. You'll see from their instructions that you'll first flash the router with the mini version. Then you'll follow a procedure to flash it with a full version. You'll want to use the standard version when you do that, v2.3SP1.

They're in the Wiki section.

http://wrt-wiki.bsr-clan.de/index.php?title=Installation#Supported_Devices

When you flash (both mini and standard), make sure you use the GENERIC code found in the Standard directory. Do not use the WRT54GS code included in the Standard directory. That is only used when flashing via TFTP. You'll flash via the web GUI, so you always want GENERIC.
