I read some recent postings that sounded relevant, but none of them dealt with this issue.

I have a Verizon FTTH ONT box outside my house, and rather than disconnecting there and risking them reconnecting my phone line some day, I found where the blue pair from the Cat5 hooks into what looks like a little punchdown board, maybe four inches square. (I had my house wiring redone a year or two ago.) It would seem all I would have to do is disconnect the blue pair from that tiny panel. (I'm going to plug the Vonage adapter into a wall jack; the broadband enters the house on the complete opposite side of the house from the phone panel. I do have a couple of network jacks in other parts of the house, but none are anywhere near that panel.)

Anyway, all the instructions I've seen say to disconnect the wiring from the outside, but I see where that same cable I'd disconnect outside runs to the inside; is there any reason why wouldn't I disconnect it there? It seems more secure to me.

Your solution is fine. It doesn't matter which end of the cable is disconnected as long as it gets disconnected. Your way does give you more control.

Thanks! It seemed simple, one wire, you should be able to disconnect it at either end and get the same result, but those kinds of assumptions can cause serious problems. I went for it, and all my phones are working on our Vonage service now. (At least on the virtual number...see below.)

(My number is in transition, so the line was already dead and my old number is "disconnected", so I couldn't test whether I lost a dial tone by doing this. I'm new here, but I'm not a noob. Very Happy Now if they'd only complete the transfer, I'd be MUCH happier...my number has been "disconnected" for two days now!)

Glad it worked. Good luck with the transfer. I'm surprised that it wasn't effective within hours of the service being disconnected from the land line, but I suppose some companies are slower than others.
