I ordered Vonage on the 25th and was immediately charged for the first month (14.99), the activation fee (29.99), shipping and handling (9.95?), and a few fees/taxes (FET, 911 fee, 911 state tax, recovery fee). I got the phone adapter today (31st). I will not actually be using Vonage until the 13th, when I move to my new apartment. Does that mean my first month of service will start on the 13th, when I actually activate my phone adapter? Or has my 1st month of service already started on the 25th?

Also, I e-mailed Vonage asking if they would refund my activation fee. Do I have a good chance of getting a refund, or will they tell me to shove it? Heh...

Your first month of service started on the 25th when you placed your order. As for getting your activation fee back, Vonage is bleeding cash and not likely to refund your activation fee. Doesn't hurt to ask, though, I suppose.

Essentially, yeah. I was disappointed when I found that my service began the moment I ordered as well. At the least they could have waited until I got the adapter and actually hooked it up, but I suppose there are reasons why they can't always wait for that event to occur.

I do not work for Vonage - DO NOT have Vonage stock (who would have ever thought anyone would ever say that) and am only a mostly satisfied Vonage customer saving about $40-$50/month.

Now what was the question? Oh Yeah

1) You ordered Vonage on the 25th and that was the first day of service. Vonage doesnt know nor do they care if you will be using it or not. If you ordered it you are paying for the service whether you use it or not. You were assigned a temporary number if you are waiting for porting so that you CAN use it immediately. They used to give one or two months free to offset this type of situation and I do not know if this applies in this situation or even if it is being offered anymore.

2)Activation Fee- You ARE going to activate it arent you? If so then why would you be entitled to a refund? I guess if you were to NOT activate it you could get a refund but then why would buy you order service in the first place? Seriously they are not going to refund the money and why should they? All of us have paid it and it is in the TOS. Sorry.

Perhaps you shouldn't have ordered Vonage until you moved in to the new place.

I ordered Vonage early because I realized it would take a while for the adapter to reach me (I've read that it can take up to 2 weeks). I didn't realize the service would start the minute I ordered it, since with my cable Internet provider, for instance, I was only billed starting from the moment I actually called in to activate my modem. I thought Vonage would be the same. Guess I was wrong.

As for asking the company to refund me the activation fee, I'd heard from several friends who ordered the service that they either a) were not charged the fee at all, or b) had the fee credited back after they contacted Vonage. I guess Vonage did that to get some good PR. I've got nothing to lose, so I asked.

Thanks for your reply, but if you're going to be antagonistic, I suggest you breathe deeply and not respond the next time.

antagonistic - guess you mean this def:
actively expressed opposition or hostility

I am sorry if you took it wrong and I did not mean it to be antagonistic but sarcasm is tough to type. Didnt get the humor huh? I was hostile? But while I am sorry you took it wrong I do not take anything I typed back. I meant what I typed and typed what I meant. Seems that you are the one being antagonistic demanding money back. Have you read the TOS.

excerpts
-------------------------
2. SERVICE
2.1 (a) Monthly Term. Service is offered on a monthly basis for a term that begins on the date that Vonage activates your Service and ends on the day before the same date in the following month
--------------------------
3. CHARGES; PAYMENTS; TAXES; DISCONNECTION
3.1 Billing. When the service is activated, you must provide us with a valid email address and a credit or debit card number from a card issuer that we accept. [snip] We will bill all charges, applicable taxes and surcharges monthly in advance [snip] to your credit or debit card, including but not limited to :activation fees; [snip]

The above fees are defined as follows:
Activation Fee - This fee covers charges for setting up your account and activating you on our system.
--------------------------

Call CS and try to get the refund and let us know how it works out. Ask and you might receive.

Seems to me that you were being antagonistic/hostile. You were the one demanding a refund. i am appalled that you did not know that servicce begins when you ordered - maybe next time read the TOS first.

Common tactic that people use on the Internet is to first say something offensive to someone, then when they get called for it, try to make everything out as a "joke." Obviously the person who took offense was some loser with no humor, right?

I was in no way being antagonistic by asking for a refund of the activation fee. I noticed that others had gotten it as a promotion, so all I did was try and see if I could not get it as well.

Also, whether or not I read the TOS is none of your concern. If you're not related to Vonage in any way, I don't understand why you are "trolling" for them. Others have made the same mistake.

All of this bull!@## with Vonage and their tatics is why I dumped them for a more customer friendly and customer focused company after a 1yr +. and better features.
