Just do what it tells you in the terms of service!
TOS Section 2
"2. SERVICE 2.1 (a) Monthly Term. Service is offered on a monthly basis for a term that begins on the date that Vonage activates your Service and ends on the day before the same date in the following month. Subsequent terms of this Agreement automatically renew on a monthly basis unless you give us written notice of non-renewal at least ten (10) days before the end of the monthly term in which the notice is given."
Give them WRITTEN notice (send it certified mail for proof if you have a concern) and then don't worry about it.
IF (and I say if because, for all the gripes about cancelling, I've not heard ANYONE say they cancelled IN WRITING, to the address provided in the TOS, with proof of delivery and then had any problem) you happen to be charged beyond the time that you should, you then have every proper leg to stand on based on your having cancelled the "right" way, in accordance with the TOS.
But remember, you agreed to the TOS when you signed up, and that included agreeing to billing terms, including the $39.99 early cancellation fee, the 10 days notice, and the full month (no pro-ration) billing. As long as you accept those things as being legitimate charges (and they are, because we agreed to them) and cancel in writing, you'll be fine! |

Fine post, rgnok. You summarize the key termination terms well.
I have seen rants on other sites complaining about Vonage and about half of them are complaints about things that the customer agrees to in the terms of service. Like the EULAs in the software we use, these terms of service are biased in favor of the vendor and we really have no choice but to accept them or look to another vendor. When I decide to cease my Vonage contract (assuming Vonage lasts long enough for me to cancel), I will likely do it in writing (and follow up with phone calls).
However, I do see a bit of a contradiction when folks complain bitterly about the bad customer service and then cancel because it, but then expect that somehow the agents who could not service them as an ongoing customer will do their jobs exceptionally well when processing the cancellation. |
