Yesterday I was playing around with my internet trying to fix my slow internet problem and my setup is Ambit Cable Modem ---> VT1005v ---> WRT54GL and while I was going over my setup I was on the setup page for the VT1005v and I noticed that the DHCP server was enabled so I figured that the WRT54GL does all DHCP server stuff so I wouldn't need it enabled on the VT1005v and man was I wrong. I rebooted and now none of the computers can connect to the internet. I used to be able to access the VT1005v by using the ip 192.168.102.1 but now that is not working.

The only reason I messed with this was because if I take out the Vonage adapter so its set up Ambit Cable Modem ---> WRT54GL -->computers then the internet is awsom but once the Vonage adapter gets stuck in between the two it all gets bogged down.

Please Help me I've had so many internet problems lately even after getting rid of the BEFSR41 v. 3 and exchanging it with the WRT54GL (helped a tad bit). What are your guys suggestions. PS: I am running DD-WRT v23 on my router with pretty much stock settings. Also someone said something about needing a crossover cable for the VT1005v? I dont know about that.

Um, why that heck are you running the phone adapter BEFORE the GL? That's your bottleneck. I would switch it around, make the GL the DHCP server, and relagate the Phone adapter to phone duties only, no routing. If you're concerned about QOS, you have it built into the DDWRT to mess with.

I'm not sure about the technical details with your cable modem, but it does seem that by putting your DHCP server after your VT1005 and having both enabled there should be problems.

I use Qwest DSL and have:

Actiontec DSL modem --> VT1005 --> my ethernet switch and the rest of my LAN. The DHCP is enabled on the DSL modem and disabled on the VT1005 and my system seems to work.

I thoight that by running everything through the VT1005 then into the DSL modem it would take advantage of the QoS in the VT1005. If not, should I mess with it? It seems to be working. Smile

If it works that way, don't mess with it. If you begin to have problems in the future, you could try switching them.

I wouldn't run it that way but its currently the only way I can still connect all 4 of my computers into it and still use the Vonage adapter. Do you suggest using a switch or what? And is there any way I can fix my current problem? As in renabling the DHCP server on the VT1005v?

Where is your computer currently plugged in? If it's plugged into the WRT54GL, then plug it in to the VT1005 and see if you can get to the VT1005 admin page so that you can re-enable DCHP. If that doesn't work, check your VT1005 user's manual and see if there is a reset function. If there is no reset function, and the manual doesn't give any hints, then try setting a static IP of 192.168.102.100 on your computer. (Be sure to remember any changes you make to anything.) Plug the computer into the VT and try to get to the admin page.

The problem here is that nothing can communicate with the VT1005 because the VT's DHCP function is disabled, so nothing is getting an IP. You need to get it re-enabled. There's nothing wrong with having the WRT also enabled as a DHCP server. It's just servicing things on its own sub-net.

By the way, is your telephone working? My guess is that it is.

Alright I'll try you suggestion but yeah there is no reset function or anything. Right now I have it set up Ambit Modem -->WRT54GL -->VT1005v and thats how its actually suppose to be but now one computer isnt getting internet Sad

I am actually liking my internet so much right now I want to keep it but I need that other computer online. So can anyone suggest a cheap switch or something?

And yes my telephone works when I but it back between my modem and router but internet does not Sad

Pretty much as expected. The VT is getting its IP from the WRT and providing phone service, but it's not hooking up with the computer on its own sub-net.

Please give us feedback on this. It isn't the first time that we've heard of people getting into this sort of trouble with the VT1005.

Before I try, I just wanted to ask you if me turning off the DHCP server on the VT1005v is the cause for this mess? Should it of still worked without DHCP enabled or does it need to be enabled?

Yes, that's the cause for this mess. It needs to be enabled for you to get internet service for the computer plugged into it. The trick is getting it turned back on again.
