PostPosted: Mon May 29, 2006 11:52 pm    Post subject: Quick fax question? Reply with quote Back to top

So we have had Vonage for a few weeks now and so far so good. My aunt wants to hook up her fax machine, and even after reading around Im confused? Do we need to get the Fax line? as far as I understand it line 1 is a voice line, and the fax line is a dedicated data line, which would seem better for faxing. Does line 1 work reliably for faxing? Is there anything special I should do to make it work better? I have heard I should put a DSL filter between the Vonage adapter, and fax machine, I should dial *99 before my faxes. So whats the deal? She doesn't really mind the extra 9.99/month if it's that much better then the standard line, but if we don't need a seperate line that would be good.

Thanks

fax line is a dedicated data line, which would seem better for faxing. it's better to have dedicated fax line reliably for faxing...
make sure that you have good bandwidth from your internet service provider (each line should have min of 90kbps)...

Many people, including myself, fax using their single Vonage line. When I initially set my fax machine up I called customer support and they were able to alter some settings to make faxing more reliable. Additionally you may need to change some settings on your fax machine to disable ECM and limit the baud rate.

I agree with "scerruti". With a few tweaks, you can fax successfully through the single Vonage voice line.

I checked the fax machine, and there is no way to limit the baud rate, and I didn't see any ECM. Anyway she doesn't mind the 9.99/month so I think were just gonna get the Fax line

If you press the "star and pound" key at the same time on the fax machine you will see the options for the advanced settings (baud rate and ECM). If you Contact Technical Support, they can assist you with properly making the changes that need to be made for successful faxing through the Vonage voice line.

If it were me, I would first try to see if you can fax (send and receive) successfully through the Vonage voice line. If not, then go for the dedicated fax line.

P.S. Depending on the type of Vonage voice adapter you have, it is NOT neccessary to dial *99 before you fax...I use the Vonage/Linksys router, WRTP54G, and I do NOT have to dial *99.

I will try the "star and pound" is that a standar thing on all machines? You say they will assist me with the settings? Are they settings I can do my-self? If so how? I have a Motorolla VT2442, do you know if I need to dial *99 or not? Thanks

What I would do first before making any changes to the fax machines settings is try to send and receive a fax through the Vonage voice line...You may not have to change any settings. If you can't send or receive faxes, then contact Customer Service and let them assist you with the settings. Do you still have the manual for the fax machine? I'm sure there is information in there that will tell you how to change the baud rate and how to turn off and on ECM.

Since you have the Motorolla VT2442, you do NOT have to dial *99. http://vonage.com/help.php?article=134&category=27&nav=2

Related to Fax question. Any problems receiving faxes on a single voice Vonage line with answering machine on same line? I have a fax and an answering machine now on my road runner cable (plus computer and TV) and I can receive faxes only when answering machine is disabled and vice versa. Or else I must have something wrong with my settings.
